- Childminder in Birmingham12 Jun 2018Requires improvement
Birmingham
This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:
The childminder does not use professional development effectively. Arrangements for the supervision of assistants are not robust enough to build on their knowledge and experience and drive improvements in the provision and the outcomes for children. Self-evaluation processes are not rigorous enough. Although the childminder has identified areas for improvement, she has not taken swift or thorough action to raise the quality of the provision. At times, some children take over the activities and experiences and the childminder misses opportunities to enable other children to make independent choices or express their thoughts and ideas.

The provision requires improvement
The childminder has made several changes since her last inspection which have helped to improve the opportunities she provides for children. She has worked with local services and other providers, and has a better understanding of how to meet the care and learning needs of children. She continues to improve the experiences she offers to children even further.

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:
The childminder does not provide effective training, support and coaching for her assistants to help them fully extend and develop their skills and knowledge. Not enough focus is placed on improving the quality of teaching or raising outcomes for children. The childminder does not always ensure that children are able to focus sufficiently on play and learning. This is because there are distractions that take away their attention. The childminder does not always encourage parents to share what they know about their children's learning at home to provide a full picture of their levels of achievement. The childminder has not established fully effective partnership working with other providers to help promote a more collaborative approach to children's learning.

provision requires improvement
The childminder does not have a thorough understanding of the learning and development requirements. Monitoring of planning and assessments is not sufficiently rigorous to ensure children make good progress in their development. Self-evaluation shows that the childminder has addressed the recommendations from the last inspection. However, some current weaknesses are not included. The childminder has undertaken some courses to maintain her professional development. However, she is not informed about the required progress check for children aged between two and three years. The childminder has supportive relationships with parents, resulting in a shared understanding of their child's learning and care needs. For instance, she has discussions about how to promote reading and children's self-help skills. Parents express their appreciation of the childminder's caring attitude towards the children.

The provision requires improvement
The childminder has made some effort to improve the setting since her last inspection. However, there are still areas that require further attention. The childminder has received support from the local authority to improve the learning environment. She has devised prompt sheets to support her understanding of the areas of learning, and children's next steps in learning are displayed on the wall. However, the childminder's assessment of what children need to learn next is not sharply focused and does not align to individual children's next stage of development. Therefore, it is difficult for the childminder to quickly address gaps in children's progress and to move learning forward.
- Childminder in Birmingham11 Feb 2015Requires improvement
Birmingham
This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:
The childminder does not implement a fully effective observation and assessment process to offer further challenge and extend children's learning and development or identify any gaps in children's learning. The childminder does not consistently share information about children's learning and development with parents and other early years providers. This means they are not always able to plan together and share ideas of how to maximise children's learning. Self-evaluation and the monitoring of the educational programmes does not focus robustly enough on the quality of teaching and learning to ensure all children make good progress.

This is a provision that requires improvement
n Although the childminder has made improvements since the last inspection, the quality of teaching is inconsistent. The childminder is not fully successful in providing support, coaching and guidance to ensure that her assistants' teaching skills are good enough. As a result, children do not make the progress of which they are capable. n The childminder does not consistently provide effective support for the youngest children to develop their speaking and listening skills. n Although the childminder provides parents with clear information about their children's day, she does not share ongoing details about learning targets or ideas about how parents can extend children's learning at home. n The childminder does not consistently challenge older or the most able children. At times, these children are not motivated to play and learn.

provision requires improvement
The childminder has an appropriate understanding of the legal requirements. She has a range of policies and procedures in place and shares these with parents to support children's health and well-being. She has evaluated her provision and there are plans in place to drive improvement. As a result, the childminder has addressed the areas for improvement made at the last inspection. She has attended paediatric first-aid training to keep her knowledge updated and holds a level 3 early years qualification. Daily discussions with parents ensure information about children is regularly shared to support children's continuity of care. The childminder has developed links with the local nursery and schools. However, information sharing with other settings that children attend is not fully effective when discussing children's progress to help improve outcomes for children.

This is a provision that requires improvement
n The childminder has a sound knowledge of risk assessment but does not follow the setting procedures relating to this consistently. This specifically refers to the use of the garden. n Self-evaluation is not sufficiently robust. The childminder does not recognise all weaknesses in practice and, therefore, does not take action to address these. n The childminder does not focus her professional development sharply enough on developing her already good teaching skills to a higher level. n The childminder does not fully consider the needs of the babies during some outdoor activities to identify how to challenge them even further.

provision requires improvement
The childminder has a reasonable understanding of her responsibilities to protect children's welfare and promote their learning. She undertakes robust risk assessments for outings to ensure children are kept fully safe and secure when away from the setting. The childminder has attended a number of training events in relation to child protection. As a result, she is very confident in identifying and responding to any concern she may have about children in her care. However, the childminder has not undertaken this level of training in relation to identifying and planning for children's next steps in learning. As a result, she is less confident and effective in this area of her practice. The childminder has begun to self-evaluate and reflect on her practice, but this is not yet thorough enough to identify and target the areas that require improvement.

This is a provision that requires improvement
n The childminder does not always focus well enough on making sure that all the assistants have a robust understanding of their roles and responsibilities. Some assistants are less confident of the childminder's safeguarding policy, with particular regards to the wider safeguarding issues. n The childminder does not consistently use children's assessment information to precisely target their next steps in learning. n The childminder does not consistently support children to learn what is expected of them and why it is important. At times, she does not provide clear messages about rules and boundaries.

This is a provision that requires improvement
n The planning is not consistently good enough. The childminder does not always provide children, particularly babies with activities suited to their age, stage and learning needs to help promote their best possible progress. n The childminder does not focus her professional development as well as possible on enhancing her teaching skills to help continually improve outcomes for all children. n The childminder does not model consistently good language or provide young children with plenty of opportunities to participate in conversations. Therefore, they do not yet gain skills in speaking at the highest level. n The childminder does not make the best use of her self-evaluation and monitoring systems to reflect carefully on teaching and the curriculum to help further improve.

This is a provision that requires improvement
n The childminder and her assistant observe the children's learning as they play and they make assessments about what they know and can do. However, they do not make regular use of this information to provide challenging experiences that support younger children's learning, to ensure that they make the best possible progress. n The two-way flow of information with parents about their children's learning and development is not fully effective to help parents to best support their children's learning at home. The childminder is currently developing new methods of communication and does not routinely share with parents what she knows about children's individual next steps in learning. n Self-evaluation is not robust enough to identify all areas where improvement is needed.
- Childminder in Birmingham20 Sept 2018Requires improvement

The provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:
n The childminder does not plan effectively to provide stimulating learning experiences that meet the individual needs of each child. n The childminder does not make consistently accurate assessments of children's development that identify gaps in learning. Therefore, children do not receive effective support to make the best progress in their learning and development. n The childminder does not help children to learn the reasons for eating good food or for drinking water. n The childminder does not review her practice rigorously enough to identify key weaknesses and to address these promptly.

Information about the setting
The childminder has been registered since 2009. She lives with her husband and two children in the Bourneville area of Birmingham. The provision requires improvement
The childminder has made some improvements since her last inspection. She has reorganised her provision, so that children have space and opportunities to make choices in their learning and play safely. However, the quality of education the childminder provides is still variable. At times, the implementation of her curriculum is weak. Some experiences that children receive do not challenge them to extend on what they already know and can do. Older children show some interest in the activities planned and often initiate their own play. However, the childminder does not always focus on what children need to learn next. She does not consider how she can use their interests to help them build on their prior knowledge and skills and support them to remain highly engaged in their learning. In addition, there are times when younger children's communication and language is not encouraged well enough. Therefore, children are not supported to make consistently good progress.

The childminder has not followed procedures correctly to notify Ofsted of all adults living on the premises to ensure suitability checks are completed. The childminder has not carried out rigorous risk assessments to ensure all aspects of the premises remain suitable for the care of children. The childminder does not have a clear understanding of the requirement to assign a key person to each child to meet their individual needs. The childminder has not used the self-evaluation process effectively to focus on key weaknesses that lessen the quality of the provision.

provision requires improvement
The childminder reviews her practice and requests parents' feedback on the service. As a result, some commitment is shown to improving the provision. The childminder has attended paediatric first-aid training and food safety training. However, she has not attended any training focused on improving her teaching practice. This limits her knowledge about how to plan appropriately for children's learning. As a result, children are not supported to make the best possible progress. The childminder demonstrates a basic understanding of child protection. However, she has not completed a required child protection course that is relevant to her role. The childminder understands the need to work with other professionals when required. She has made links with other childminders in the area to share advice.
