She does not focus well enough on her ongoing professional development. n The childminder does not hold thorough discussions with all parents about children's achievements on entry to fully establish their starting points.
p.1
It has the following strengths
n The childminder is skilled in helping young children to develop their communication and language skills. For example, she encourages them to use their home languages during play and helps them to extend their vocabulary. Older children listen attentively and clearly express their ideas. n Children make good progress. Effectiveness of leadership and management requires improvement
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a suitable understanding of possible indicators that a child is at risk. She knows the procedures to follow should she need to report any child protection concerns. She understands the importance of informing Ofsted of any concerns that may affect her suitability to work with children, including those regarding members of her household. The childminder does not maintain all necessary records relating to children. She does not ensure that an accurate record of children's times and hours of attendance are consistently recorded. The childminder ensures that the premises are suitable. She makes careful risk assessments of her home and places she visits with children. Although the childminder attends some training, she does not focus fully on improving her teaching skills even further. She does not use self- evaluation robustly enough to identify weaknesses in her practice. The childminder keeps

parents informed about children's ongoing progress. However, she does not fully establish children's starting points to enable her to plan precisely for their learning from the outset.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
Overall, the childminder monitors children's ongoing progress effectively and makes good use of her observations of children to identify the skills they need to develop further. She provides children with good opportunities to acquire literacy skills. Older children eagerly practise their writing and learn about the letters and sounds in their names. They talk confidently about characters from their favourite stories. Children benefit from opportunities to explore their creative ideas and experiment freely. They concentrate as they mix together different colours of paint and use their fingers and a range of painting tools to create interesting effects.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement
Weaknesses in some aspects of the childminder's record keeping mean that children's well-being is not given high enough consideration. The childminder teaches children how to look after themselves, such as eating healthy foods. However, she does not reinforce children's understanding of following good personal hygiene routines. For example, she does not consistently encourage children to wash their hands before eating. The childminder helps children to learn about communities beyond their immediate experiences and to respect the differences between themselves and others. Children gain an awareness of friendships and show kindness to each other.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children display positive attitudes to learning. They ask questions to deepen their understanding and persevere as they attempt to solve problems. Younger children keep trying as they search for the correct place for jigsaw pieces. They work out that they need to rotate the pieces to enable them to fit correctly. Children develop their understanding of the world. They learn about animal habitats and their diets. They benefit from opportunities to explore magnets and uses of technology. For example, during role play, children use an electronic till to input the price of shopping items.
