Thank you for making our visit to your school so enjoyable. You made us feel welcome and we were impressed with your behaviour and how keen you are to learn. We have found that St Matthew's, Westminster is a good school. It helps you to make good progress, particularly in your reading and writing. This is because the staff work well to help you overcome any difficulties. You also have many opportunities to learn new skills and you show a good understanding of how to keep fit and healthy. You also learn the skills you will use later in life, including ICT. You help to make St Matthew's a happy, harmonious place to learn. The school looks after you well and helps you feel safe and well cared for. This helps you enjoy school and we are impressed with your above-average attendance. Even though you are doing well, there are two areas we have asked the school to improve. The number of you who achieve Level 5 in mathematics at the end of

Short inspection of St Matthew’s School, Westminster
Since the last inspection, the school has grown in size. Twenty-three new pupils have joined key stages 1 or 2 since the academic year started in September. This is in addition to the pupils admitted at the start of the academic year. Some pupils enter with skills and knowledge below those expected for their age. You, together with teachers, manage this well by ensuring that all pupils are given opportunities to catch up if needed. My observations of pupils’ work in lessons and in their workbooks confirm the school’s own progress information that new pupils are making good progress.

You have ensured that the school continues to be a nurturing and caring environment. Pupils say that they enjoy being part of the St Matthew’s community. They are thoughtful and attentive and told me that they like attending school because learning is fun. You ensure that pupils behave well in lessons and around the school, and that they are polite and friendly. They understand and can explain the school core values of ‘Belonging, Believing, Achieving’. Staff ensure that pupils who join the school during the year are welcomed and settle in well. Pupils enjoy getting certificates for their achievements, and enthuse about the many outings and visits that the school organises. The variety of extra-curricular clubs that pupils can choose, such as cooking, drama and football, promote their interests and are very popular. You have made sure that pupils learn a broad and balanced range of subjects, which includes Spanish.

Although yours is a good school, we have asked the headteacher, staff and the governing body to make some changes to help it to improve further. We have asked them to make sure that the work is challenging for all of you in all your lessons. We have also asked them to provide more opportunities for you to learn your basic writing and mathematical skills when you are doing your topic work and work in other subjects.

Information about the school
Westminster Academy is of average size for a secondary school and has a small but growing sixth form. It serves an area that is socially, culturally and linguistically very diverse and its intake reflects this wide mix. A significant proportion of students speak languages other than English at home, and many are at an early stage of learning English. The proportion of students known to be eligible for free school meals is much higher than average, indicating the significant challenges that many families in the area face. There is a high proportion of students with special educational needs and/or disabilities, the majority of whom have moderate learning difficulties or behavioural, emotional or social difficulties. The academy was given a notice to improve following its last inspection. It has a specialism in international business and enterprise and it has recently achieved the International School Award.

4 of 9 Inspection Report: St Matthew's School, Westminster, 13 February 2008 this support where needed. Pupils respond extremely well to the school's provision. They make excellent progress in developing independence, initiative, responsibility and co-operation. They thoroughly enjoy school life, are very well behaved and enthusiastic about their work. Attendance for the last reporting year was below national averages and is an on-going focus for the school, although there are early signs of improvement. The school has worked very hard on this issue and the work of the learning mentor and school home liaison officer are particularly commendable. Parents now need to play their part in ensuring that their children attend regularly. Care, guidance and support are outstanding. Staff show high levels of commitment and competence in meeting individual needs. They create a safe and supportive environment where

Description of the school
Westminster Academy opened in September 2006 and moved into its current premises in September 2007. At that time, it also began to offer sixth form provision, and this year it began to teach the International Baccalaureate. The academy is smaller than the average secondary school, with 837 students on roll. There is a wide ethnic, linguistic and cultural mix in the student population, which reflects the area that the academy serves. Most of the students speak at least one other language in addition to English, and some are in the relatively early stages of learning English. A small number of students start at the academy at different times throughout the school year without previous experience of schooling in the UK, and some come from families that have been through trauma in their country of birth. The proportion of students eligible for free school meals is very high, reflecting the challenging circumstances that many

Year 6 is lower than in English. Also, although teaching is good, we found that some activities in lessons need to be linked together more effectively so that you all understand what to do next to help you to aim for higher levels in your work. This is why we have asked the school to improve two areas. Help you make better progress in mathematics so that more of you achieve a Level 5 at the end of Year 6. Teachers will make sure you are set targets to help you achieve this and will also show you the next steps to take when they mark your books. Make sure that all of the teaching is at least good and more is outstanding. The school will achieve this by working with teachers to agree their own targets and help them to share the best ways of teaching. You can help by always trying to reach the highest level you can and by continuing to contribute well in lessons.
