Claughton, Wirral, Merseyside, CH41 0EZ
Description of the school
Wirral Hospitals School and Home Education Service provides education for pupils who are unable to attend mainstream school for health reasons. It takes place in three locations. The Joseph Paxton Campus is the main base and provides part time education for pupils between the ages of 10 and 16 who have difficulties, such as school phobia, emotional insecurity, or eating disorders. A second establishment is at Adcote House. This provides six week assessment for pupils with severe psychological problems. Most pupils in these two settings have been reluctant to attend their mainstream schools. All pupils, except those in Year 11, remain on the roll of their original school as the main aim is for them to return to mainstream education. The ability level of pupils is wide, but when they enter the school many are underachieving because of disrupted education. There are a small percentage of pupils with statements of special educational

Your school is providing you with a good education. Your behaviour is good and this means you learn well. You told us how you are made to feel welcome in school and people are very friendly. You told us bullying is very rare and if it happens, the staff deal with it promptly. Your awareness of how to keep safe is good. You take on responsibilities extremely well and we were very impressed with the links you have and the work you have done in the local community. You know a very great deal about how to be fit and healthy. You make good progress in lessons and, by the time you leave at the end of Year 6, most of you reach the standards expected in English and mathematics. This is because the teaching you receive is good and you work hard. School leaders and governors do a good job. They have put together a very interesting curriculum for you to follow and you are becoming high-quality learners. The staff take excellent care of you all so that you feel safe. They make sure you are

The school’s leaders agree with us that further improvements are needed so that you can all achieve as well as possible. These are some things we have asked them to do next, because we think they will help your school to carry on improving. Make sure that teaching is always good or better and that lessons are always challenging, especially for those of you who learn rapidly. Improve the ways the leaders track and measure how much progress you are all making. Improve the big plan that is made for the school each year by making sure it has a sharp focus on raising your achievement.

Congratulations! Your school no longer requires special measures. It is much improved and now provides you with a satisfactory education. The school takes good care of you and you get the help and support you need to help you learn. This is because teaching and the curriculum are much better than when inspectors came to the school in April 2010. Getting a school out of special measures takes a great deal of hard work. Well done to your governors, headteacher, teachers and teaching assistants too! You are all now making better progress in English and reaching the standards that other pupils in other schools do in mathematics at the end of Key Stage 2. This is because teachers and teaching assistants have made learning more interesting and worked hard to keep track of how well you are doing.

Inspection of Fender Primary School, Wirral, CH49 8HB
We think your school is satisfactory, which means there are many good things about the school and some things which could be improved. We agree with you and your parents and carers that the school takes good care of you all and there is always an adult around to give you extra help when you need it. You told us how much you enjoy school, particularly meeting friends and joining in all the sporting activities. I spent a lovely time in the Reception class. The new children really liked playing in the outdoor area and seemed to be settling in very quickly. The children in the bases get through a lot of activities during the day and ‘LOT’ time seemed very exciting.

To help your school become even better I have asked governors and staff to continue to ensure you do as well as you can in your learning. I agreed with the school that this should be done by: ensuring teachers share what they do well with each other asking teachers to use the information they collect, on how well you are doing, to plan activities that will help you learn even more asking teachers to check more carefully how well you are learning in lessons to ensure you all do as well as you can asking teachers to tell you exactly how you can improve your work.

We know your school leaders, parents and carers and you would like your school to be outstanding. To help that to happen we have asked your teachers to do two things. First, to make sure there are more outstanding lessons than at present by listening to your ideas in lessons, discussing them with you and exploring ways in which they help you to learn more. The second thing is for teachers to assess your work in all subjects as accurately as they do in English and mathematics. Yours sincerely
