- Marjorie McClure School16 Jul 2014Outstanding
110 Slades Drive, Chislehurst, BR7 6FG
Information about this school
About three quarters of pupils have a White British background. Very few pupils are at an early stage of speaking English as an additional language. Pupils have access to a range of on-site nursing and therapy services. Wood Lodge is a small off-site residential facility that small groups of older pupils use for short periods in order to develop their self-help skills and to experience community living. The school manages this resource, but it is also used by other Bromley schools and colleges. The school shares a site with Coopers Technology College, an academy that a small minority of pupils in Years 7 to 14 attend for some lessons. Older pupils also attend Bromley College. As Marjorie McClure is recognised as a specialist school for physical development, staff work with five partner schools to develop their skills in supporting pupils with physical difficulties. The headteacher is a local leader of education.

You feel safe at school and know how to look after yourselves. A few of you are sometimes worried about bullying and the boisterous activities of older pupils, but you say that adults in school sort out problems when you raise them. Overall your behaviour in lessons and around the school is satisfactory. Over the last year your attendance has improved. Last year it was average and so far this year it is higher. Well done!

strengths and are aware of those teachers that require further support and development. However, they do not always ensure that whole-school initiatives are consistently implemented across the school. Hence, there is still too much variation across and within subject areas. The NLE has an astute understanding of the strengths and areas for development of the school. Consequently, the NLE is offering high levels of strategic challenge and support, which is helping the headteacher and other senior leaders to make the necessary changes. Plans are in place to strengthen this support still further. School leaders work closely with other schools within the Realise Academy Partnership Trust and the Bromley Schools’ Collegiate. This gives them the opportunity to share best practice, and school leaders value these external partners highly. Leaders monitor the progress, behaviour and attendance of those pupils studying at alternative provision.

Thank you very much for welcoming us to your school. Burnt Ash Primary is a satisfactory school. You make satisfactory progress and leave school with below average attainment in English and mathematics. You enjoy your learning and feel you learn a lot in lessons. We are pleased with the progress you are making in your reading. We judge teaching to be satisfactory because most teachers plan interesting activities and ask good questions to improve your learning, but sometimes lessons do not move along quickly enough for you to achieve well. The headteacher and her team of senior teachers lead the school satisfactorily. They work well together and know what needs improving.

Inspection findings
Since the last inspection, you have improved the standard of teaching, learning and assessment, particularly for the most able. Leaders and governors continue to raise expectations for outcomes for the most-able pupils, resulting in stronger teaching and learning for this group. Teachers increasingly plan lessons that meet the needs of the most-able pupils more accurately than in the past. The progress made by the most-able pupils is strong in many subjects. Your evaluation of the school is accurate. You use governors and trust members to check your self-evaluation. They know the school’s strengths in promoting pupils’ personal development, behaviour and welfare, and in maintaining high expectations of the quality of teaching, learning and assessment. Leaders utilise established relationships with the local teacher training provider, the Bromley Schools’ Collegiate, to recruit strong teachers and then develop them through in-
