This assurance inspection was carried out under The Care Standards Act 2000 to assess the effectiveness of the service, how it meets the core functions of the service as set out in legislation, and to consider how well it complies with The Children’s Homes (England) Regulations 2015 and the ‘Guide to the Children’s Homes Regulations, including the quality standards’. p.2

Findings from the inspection

The manager is well respected by staff who all spoke highly of him. They said that he leads by example and is very supportive. He ensures that a nurturing culture prevails in the home, and that staff are playful, accepting, curious and empathetic in their daily practice. This is further supported by training that equips staff for their roles, and a therapist who works alongside staff.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

The manager advocates on the child’s behalf when plans in place are not in the best interests of the child. He ensures that the child’s wishes are considered when decisions are being made, and that necessary changes happen as agreed.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

The transition into the home for the child was smooth and successful. During the movie period, staff had the opportunity to build health relationships with the child. This was done through staff visiting the child, going on activities, and the child visiting the home. This made the move easier for the child as they were familiar with staff and their new home. The child said that they like the home, staff and feels safe. The child said, ‘When I feel sad, I can talk to any one of the staff.’

p.2

Findings from the inspection

In the short time that the child has lived at the home, progress has been noticed in all areas of their development. The child is living in an environment where routine and structure is promoted by all the staff. The consistent approach is allowing the child to flourish, as their sleep patterns are better which is benefitting the child’s mental health. Furthermore, the child is willing to learn has been engaging in online tutoring, the effectiveness of this is hard to evaluate as it is in its infancy stages.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

Staff learn new skills through training that is specific to the child. The manager has consulted with external professionals such as, psychologists, who deliver specific bespoke training. Staff say that they can tap into the inhouse therapist for support at any time. This helps them to better meet the child’s needs.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

The manager works well with all health services. This is mainly to devise safety plans to support the child, should they need to go to the hospital. The plan in place is designed to reduce the child anxiety and has worked well when in use.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

Risk assessments in place are specific to the child and include known risks and triggers. Strategies to support the child are clear. The plan is ever changing as the child is new to the home. When new risks and triggers arise, the manager acts without delay and ensures that the relevant people are made aware, and all documentation is updated.
