p.1

The provision is good

The childminder creates a safe, homely and welcoming environment for children. Children are happy and secure within the setting. They move confidently around to access the different areas of learning available. The childminder has developed an ambitious curriculum for children. She is skilled at adapting activities to cater to the changing interests of children. For example, she quickly changes a rainbow rice activity designed for colour sorting to an activity based on filling and emptying containers.

p.2

The provision is good

Children's behaviour is good. The childminder helps children to understand the importance of sharing, taking turns and being a kind friend. Children develop strong friendships with their peers. They are filled with excitement as they collect their friends from nursery, jumping and giggling with glee at the sight of them. Children are respectful of each other. For instance, when they sit and eat together, they listen to one other talk without interruption. Children share with the childminder the story they read with their parents before bed last night.

p.2

The provision is good

The childminder has high expectations for all children in her care. Children are independent, feeding themselves and helping to get themselves ready to go outside. The childminder involves children in making choices, such as whether they would like a tube or a pot of yoghurt after lunch.

p.2

need to do better?

n The childminder knows children well. She talks comprehensively about children's starting points in development, the progress they have made since joining the setting and what it is they need to learn next. The childminder discusses how she observes and monitors children's development to ensure that they are appropriately challenged in all areas. Children are well prepared for the next stage of their learning. n The childminder provides a language-rich environment for children. She introduces new vocabulary as children play. The childminder helps children to learn the correct pronunciation of words by repeating them back clearly with the right sounds. For example, at snack time, when children ask for a 'nana', the childminder asks them if they would like a 'banana'. n The childminder encourages children to be active problem solvers. She demonstrates to them how they could fit magnetic tiles together to create

structures, but then allows them to build using trial and error. She provides lots of praise and encouragement which spurs children on from becoming frustrated. Children develop resilience and pride in their own achievements as they create something to hold up and show their peers. n The childminder does not always help children to learn why rules and boundaries

need to do better?

25 September 2024 are in place. For example, as children run up and down the hallway, the childminder tells them they should not run in the house. However, she does not help children to understand that if they do so they may fall and hurt themselves. n The childminder helps children to understand why healthy eating is important for their bodies. She provides a range of home-cooked and nutritious meals, such as roast dinners, shepherd's pies and pesto pasta with vegetables. The childminder also regularly takes children out to eat at restaurants while on day trips, to help them to learn about the importance of good manners at the table and social mealtimes. n The childminder helps children to learn about the local community, such as locally through a variety of outings to playgroups, libraries and local farms, to further afield with trips to the seaside. As children walk, they hold the childminder's hands and point at local buses. The childminder encourages

children to identify the numbers on the front of the buses, discuss whether it is a double or single deck bus and talk about where they are going. n Partnership with parents is good. Parents describe the progress their children have made, especially in their communication and language development, since beginning at the setting. They praise the 'fun and explorative' space the childminder provides as well as the 'delicious meals' she cook for their children. n The childminder is reflective in her practice, regularly seeking feedback from parents and carers. She liaises regularly with the local authority's early years team and continues to undertake training to continue her own professional development.
