Children experience extremely well-planned care from staff who have a comprehensive understanding of each child’s strengths and vulnerabilities. Consequently, children make significant progress from their starting points. The independent reviewing officer for one child said, ‘This is the happiest I have seen [child’s name]. The approach is excellent, and he is thriving.’

p.3

Children receive the support that they need to engage and achieve in education. One child, who experienced educational difficulties before they arrived, has recently started in a new school, and is making very good progress. Outside of school time, children enjoy a wide range of activities that promote their social and emotional development.

p.3

outstanding

Staff are committed to making sure that children have a say in all decisions that affect them, and their views are valued. Children have access to the support and resources that they need to explore and develop a sense of their own identity. Regular theme nights are enjoyed by children and are used as a way of helping children to learn about diversity.

p.3

outstanding

Children are carefully supported to achieve the goals that are important to them. All successes are noticed and celebrated. Children’s progress is captured using photos, which helps them to see how important their achievements are to staff.

p.3

outstanding

When children move out of the home, the processes that are followed are thorough and thoughtful. Children’s time at the home is captured in life-story books, which are given to children when they leave. As a result, children have a full and complete record of their time at the home. Because of the progress one child made at the home, they have recently had a successful move to a foster family.

p.3

outstanding

Children’s safety is paramount, and children say that they feel safe and protected from harm. One child said, ‘There is nothing I would change, it is perfect.’

p.3

outstanding

Staff sensitively respond to incidents in a way that is restorative and promotes reflection and learning for the child. Children access therapeutic support to enable them to learn how to manage their emotions. The use of physical restraint is rare. Inspection report children’s home: SC465588 4 When it does occur, managers carry out thorough reviews to ensure that the use of the measure was appropriate and proportionate.

p.3

outstanding

The planning and implementation of key-work sessions to support children’s care plans is exceptional. Staff demonstrate a well-informed awareness of children’s needs and risks. A coordinated approach ensures that actions arising from key-work sessions are carried out in a timely way.

p.4

outstanding

Staff give high priority to working closely with other professionals. They advocate effectively for children to ensure that they are accessing the resources and support that they need. Feedback from other professionals is very positive regarding communication and partnership working.

p.4

outstanding

Robust recruitment practices are understood and implemented. This reduces the potential for unsuitable adults to be employed at the home.

p.4

outstanding

The environment is homely, safe and secure. Children’s photos are displayed in communal areas, which contributes to children’s sense of pride and belonging.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: outstanding

The manager leads with confidence and has high aspirations for what children can achieve. One education professional said, ‘The manager and her team have always been excellent. The way they engage with children has been a much-needed lifeline. They bring stability for children so that they can access education.’

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: outstanding

Children have learned how to build and to maintain positive, trusting relationships with adults due to the very low turnover of staff. This contributes to children’s safety and sense of security.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: outstanding

The management team has a well-rounded view of the experiences of the children and the impact that the care is having on their outcomes. One example is the monitoring system introduced by the manager to consider children’s readiness to move on to live with a foster family.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: outstanding

Managers ensure that children’s care plans are comprehensive and clearly identify their needs. Behaviour support plans and risk assessments provide staff with clarity about how to meet children’s needs. Children’s input into these plans is clear.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: outstanding

Staff benefit from a range of training and development opportunities. They have regular supervision which provides them with opportunities to discuss safeguarding arrangements for children.
