p.2

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

At the time of this inspection, there were two children living at the home.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Children build trusting relationships with staff. They feel that they can talk to staff and seek support and advice when needed. Children understand why they live at the home, and the aim of their care plans. The children feel safe and well cared for.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Children are supported practically and emotionally to maintain safe relationships with their families and friends. Staff take children to see their families and supervise their time together when required. Staff supported one child to ask questions about his family time at his care review.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Both children are attending school and making progress. Education is supported positively. Staff advocate for children when there are delays in finding education. Children’s academic achievements and success are rewarded and celebrated. One child is being supported to choose further education options and apply to local colleges.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Children's physical and mental health needs are being met. Staff seek additional support for children when needed. Children’s plans are updated to include their changing and emerging needs. Staff sought specialist support for a child who experienced a significant decline in their mental health. Mental health services contributed to safety planning for the child and were embedded in their care plan.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Children are encouraged to participate in decision-making on issues that affect them. Children's meetings and key-worker sessions enable children to express their views. Children have access to the organisation’s ‘mind of my own’ application. This was used by one child to raise questions that they wanted to ask at their care review. Another child used the application when they moved into the home to let staff know their likes and dislikes.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Staff assess the needs of children moving into the home. These assessments include relevant information from placing authorities and consider the risks and impact on children already living at the home. The risks and needs of children who will live together are understood and planned for by staff.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Incidents of children going missing from the home and self-harm are well managed. Staff understand the actions needed to keep children safe. Records of incidents are clear and reported to partner agencies. Medical support and specialist advice are sought for children who experience self-harm. Inspection report children's home: SC457012 4 Children are supported to take responsibility for their behaviors and choices. Key- work sessions, rewards and consequences are used to encourage children to think about the effect of their behaviors. This helps children to progress emotionally and keep themselves safe.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Children who use discriminatory language or express discriminatory views are supported to question their beliefs. Staff use professional curiosity and positive challenge to explore alternative views with children. Children are not judged, but educated about why their views are offensive to others.

p.4

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Allegations and safeguarding concerns are not consistently shared with Ofsted or always shared promptly. One allegation of harm was not notified to Ofsted for two weeks. Another notification was also late. This meant that Ofsted had limited oversight of the children’s welfare while the investigation and enquiries took place.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The registered manager is suitably experienced and qualified. She has a good understanding of the children and the staff who support them. She is proud of the service and has ambition for children to fulfil their potential.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

Staff feel valued and supported by managers. They receive regular supervisions and are supported with personal and professional issues. Staff are encouraged to be ambitious and progress through the organisation. One staff member, who has progressed from support worker to team leader, is now being supported to progress to a manager’s role.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

Professionals and families are positive about the care that children receive. They feel that children are well supported, and that they make progress. When a child’s placement ended early, the social worker praised the staff and manager for their professionalism and the support provided to the child during a difficult period.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The monitoring and management oversight are effective. Monthly audits are made by the registered manager and responsible individual. Any gaps in planning for children and actions required to address these gaps are identified. The external monitoring reports and development plan identify service improvements. One recent development is the support of a registered mental health nurse to enhance the staff’s understanding of children’s needs and behaviours.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

Managers undertook a critical learning review after a child's placement ended. This identified that the information provided by the placing authority was not accurate or detailed enough. The review outcome recommends that the manager considers further actions to ensure that information from placing authorities is fully explored and verified. This is being discussed further with senior managers.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
