p.2
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
The manager and staff are invested in children’s progress and care about them. This is reflected in the nurturing relationships that the staff build with children and the positive reinforcement that they give children during key-work sessions and through rewarding positive behaviour and achievements. Staff work hard to ensure that children are listened to and respected. This helps children to feel cared for and valued.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Staff manage extremely sensitive situations very well to help children to maintain time with their families in difficult circumstances. One parent said that she felt at peace now that her child is being looked after at the home. Staff understand the importance of children’s time with their families and give good support to help maintain relationships that are important to the children.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Staff encourage children to develop independent living skills. They also encourage children to spend time with friends in the community. Well-assessed positive risk- taking enables children to maintain appropriate and important friendships and develop the skills that they will need as they become more independent.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Staff encourage children to participate in clubs and leisure activities that the children enjoy. One child attends cadets and is part of a football team. The children have been on a holiday away during the summer. One child said that he was able to go on holiday with his best friend. He said that it was brilliant and that was all thanks to the manager. Children benefit greatly from these new experiences.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
The home is currently being redecorated and upgraded. As part of the upgrade, the children benefit from a new kitchen and newly decorated lounge. The children’s bedrooms are personalised, and one of the children said that his bedroom has been recently decorated just how he wanted it. The children benefit from a well-cared for environment.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Staff encourage children to engage with education. All three children have education places. The manager has recognised that the school provision that one child is attending is not meeting his needs. The child is having one-to-one tuition until a suitable school is identified. However, the manager has not ensured that up-to-date personal education plans for children are kept in the children’s records. Consequently, the staff do not have all the relevant details to ensure that they are supporting children towards the correct education goals.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Children are safeguarded and feel safe at the home. The manager has ensured that the staff have appropriate training and that they understand safeguarding procedures. The staff are confident and well equipped to manage safeguarding incidents, which helps keep children safe. Inspection report children's home: SC457012 4 There has been one physical intervention incident. This was appropriate, necessary and proportionate. Staff were supportive and nurturing to the child during and after the incident. Staff encourage children to reflect on incidents and manage emotions in a safe way. Supporting children in this way has meant that there have been no further physical interventions.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
The children’s behaviour support plans focus on positive reinforcement. The plans include children’s views on how they want to be supported. Children are developing coping strategies to manage their feelings and emotions safely.
p.4
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
The manager and staff have supported children to build relationships with the local police officer. The children engage well when the officer visits the home. Children are helped to feel comfortable and confident to engage with authority figures.
p.4
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
There have been a high number of incidents of children going missing from the home. The staff manage these incidents very well and are welcoming and nurturing when children return to the home. Children feel supported when they return, and there has been a reduction in the frequency of these incidents.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
The manager is experienced and qualified for the role with a relevant diploma in management. The manager has high aspirations for children. She acts as a good role model for the staff, who benefit from the manager’s guidance and knowledge.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
Staff say that the manager is supportive and approachable. Staff have regular and effective supervision. They feel well equipped to meet children’s needs, and they benefit from professional development.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
The manager works well with other professionals to ensure that children have support from a network of people. Two social workers and an independent reviewing officer have been impressed with the manager’s and staff’s level of care for the children. Children get the specialist input that they need.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
The manager uses a range of monitoring tools to review the effectiveness of the home. She uses information from reviews to develop and implement an action plan. The manager has introduced reflective practice exercises to the staff team. The manager continually makes improvements at the home and improves the quality of care for the children.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
The manager generally ensures that staff access specific training to enable them to meet the children’s individual needs. This has included bespoke training from a clinical psychologist. However, the staff do not have specific training in managing substance misuse. This means that staff may not fully understand how to support children effectively in this area.
