p.1

The provision is good

Children arrive happily and settle quickly in this warm and nurturing environment. Here they feel safe and secure in the care of staff who know them well. This is a small setting where the learning environment offers children a stimulating range of learning experiences. Children make good progress in their learning. They try hard and persevere when things are tricky. For example, they keep winding a hand- powered torch until it lights, delightedly exclaiming 'I did it!' when the light finally shows. Children are confident to try out new ideas. As they work together to build a large train track that twists and turns across the floor, they share ideas about where it should go next. They know how to access the resources they need and use them effectively.

p.2

The provision is good

Children have lovely manners and look after each other. Staff have high expectations of behaviour. Children respond positively to the praise and encouragement they receive for their achievements. Children are learning to look after their environment. They enjoy sweeping up and help to tidy away. They recycle their waste and can talk about why they do this. Staff have identified that some children had limited opportunities to socialise during the COVID-19 pandemic. Where this had an impact on children's language and social development, staff have worked with parents and carers to identify any gaps in learning and offer additional support.

need to do better?

n Staff support children to develop their communication skills effectively. They provide many opportunities for children to talk and share their experiences. For example, the staff and children enjoy eating their lunches together. This is a lovely time to chat. As children play, staff describe what they are doing and ask questions such as 'what do you think will happen?' and 'what else do we need?'. This helps children to express their ideas. n Children develop their physical skills in the outdoor area. They enjoy pedalling bikes, balancing on beams and exploring the climbing wall. This builds their strength and coordination. Leaders have plans to further develop the range of learning opportunities offered in the outdoor area and understand how these improvements will have an impact on children's learning. n Parents talk positively about the support that staff offer to their children. They say that the pre-school feels like 'a little family'. Parents know where their

children are in their learning and say that they have come on in 'leaps and bounds' since attending the pre-school. Parents trust in the advice and support offered by the staff and believe that they do all that they can to help children to make progress. n Staff take children on regular walks into the local wooded area and to the

20 October 2022 library. Through these experiences children develop their awareness of their local community. They can talk about features of the natural world, including how the environment changes with the seasons of the year. n Children and staff enjoy sharing stories together. Staff read with lively expression and children become totally engrossed. They use stories as the stimulus for play ideas. After reading 'Owl Babies', children chose to paint pictures of the owls and talked about the owl family. This helps children to get to know the characters well and extend their vocabulary. n Staff display numbers in the environment and provide some play activities that encourage the use of mathematical language. However, they do not always use these opportunities to extend children's mathematical understanding. This means that children are not consistently building on their existing knowledge in this area of learning.

p.2

need to do better?

n Children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) are well supported. Staff work effectively with parents to identify any gaps in learning and development. They then put in place effective strategies to support children, drawing on the expertise of other professionals when needed. This helps all children to make the best progress from their starting points. n Leaders are passionate about the quality of service they offer and have a clear vision for improvement. They work effectively with staff and have established a good team ethos where staff feel supported. However, they have not yet established a system to ensure that staff have regular opportunities for coaching and professional development to build on their knowledge and good practice.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

Staff and leaders understand their roles and responsibilities in keeping children safe. They are aware of the signs and symptoms that might indicate a child is at risk of harm and know what action to take to protect them. Leaders follow safe recruitment procedures and effective induction processes. This ensures that those working with children are suitable and have consistent safeguarding knowledge. Staff carry out daily risk assessments to provide a safe learning environment. Children are learning how to keep themselves safe. They discuss road safety before going out on walks. Staff share key messages about online safety with parents and children.
