Overall effectiveness Inadequate

The quality of education Inadequate Behaviour and attitudes Inadequate Personal development Inadequate Leadership and management Inadequate Overall effectiveness at previous inspection Inadequate

p.1

The provision is inadequate

The childminder has not considered how to evacuate children safely in the event of an emergency, such as a fire. The childminder is not clear about the types of events and situations that she needs to inform Ofsted about. As a result, she failed to inform Ofsted of a significant incident.

p.2

The provision is inadequate

Children are not appropriately challenged in their learning and development. The childminder plans some activities for children. However, she is not always clear about what she wants children to learn and why. Activities are not consistently planned to build on what children know and can do. The childminder's expectations of younger children's abilities are too high. As a result, they become frustrated and disruptive. They hit out at other children and try to bite them.

p.2

The provision is inadequate

Pre-school children concentrate well as they paint pictures of leaves and acorns, using autumnal colours. However, the childminder's implementation of activities and her teaching are not consistent. She does not give younger children enough time to explore the paints to their own satisfaction. They become upset when she takes the paper that they are painting on away. Although the childminder gives them the paper back, she then stops them exploring the paint with their hands. This upsets the younger children further. Nonetheless, children do show enjoyment in some activities. For example, all children enthusiastically join in with a story and singing session.

p.2

need to do better?

n The childminder has failed to address some of the actions set at the last inspection. She has not implemented a curriculum that is sequenced to meet the needs of the children in her care. The childminder does not support children to build consistently on their skills and knowledge in all areas of learning. Children do not make the progress in their learning and development that they are capable of. n The childminder is not fully aware of the requirements for the 'Statutory framework for the early years foundation stage'. She failed to notify Ofsted of a significant event. n The childminder does not assess what children can do. She does not have an accurate understanding of their abilities. The childminder does not plan appropriate next steps to help children progress in their learning. For example, she expects that toddlers with limited language will be able to learn the names of colours. These children are not ready for this stage of learning.

p.2

need to do better?

n Children's behaviour is varied. Pre-school children listen to instructions and help tidy away toys when they have finished playing with them. When they squabble over toys, the childminder or her assistant quickly step in and support them to

p.2

need to do better?

30 September 2022 share the toys equally between them. However, when toddlers demonstrate challenging behaviour, such as snatching toys from other children, the childminder and her assistant do not support them to understand why the behaviour is not acceptable. As a result of the childminder and her assistant's failure to manage the challenging behaviour, the toddlers keep repeating the behaviour. This disrupts the play of the older pre-school children. n Mealtimes are sociable occasions. Children chat with the childminder, her assistant and their friends as they sit and eat. The childminder uses these opportunities to talk to children about nutrition and the foods that are good for them and keep them healthy. They also talk about different dietary needs. Children are learning about what makes them individual and unique. They understand that some of the children who attend the childminder's setting are

vegetarian and do not eat meat. n Children enjoy looking at books and listening to stories. The childminder and her assistant model language clearly and repeat any words that children struggle to say so that they can hear the words pronounced correctly. n The children have a close bond with the childminder and her assistant, who attend to the care needs of children well. They ensure toddlers' nappies are changed promptly and comfort children as they settle them to sleep.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are not effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

In the event of an emergency, the childminder does not have appropriate fire safety equipment that is accessible. The childminder has not put in place suitable evacuation procedures to ensure children are kept safe in an emergency. Since the last inspection, the childminder and her assistant have completed safeguarding training. They demonstrate a secure understanding of the signs of abuse, including the signs of female genital mutilation and how to identify children and families at risk of radicalisation and extremism. The childminder knows how to refer concerns about children's welfare and what action to take should an allegation be made about her suitability to work with children.
