p.1
The provision is inadequate
Children's safety is not ensured because the childminder and her assistant do not have a suitable understanding of child protection issues. Furthermore, the risk assessment for sleeping equipment is not appropriate.
p.2
The provision is inadequate
The support for learning is inconsistent and does not always help children to build on what they already know and can do. Children are eager to participate in a circle- time activity. They demonstrate that they understand the expectations and sit on the carpet in a circle facing the childminder. They enthusiastically join in with the actions and words to familiar songs. They maintain their concentration and attention. They listen intently and join in with the discussions, for example about what the weather is like today. However, when children incorrectly name shapes or numbers the childminder does not offer support to help them begin to learn how to recognise them.
p.2
The provision is inadequate
Children take part in an activity to paint a rainbow, where the childminder plans to support their communication and language skills. Although children follow instructions, the activity is repetitive and overly directed by the childminder, which hinders their learning. The childminder prompts children to say certain words to develop their vocabulary. However, the words are too complex for some children's stage of development.
p.2
need to do better?
n The childminder has not ensured that she and her assistant have an up-to-date knowledge and understanding of child protection issues to promote children's safety. n The childminder carries out an appropriate risk assessment for most of her equipment. For example, she follows the manufacturer's guidance for the swing set in the garden. However, she has not taken into account any guidance for the swing chair she uses for sleeping babies, and is therefore not ensuring children's safety. n The childminder has not given sufficient consideration to her own professional development or that of her assistant. She has not familiarised herself with some of the changes to statutory or other guidance since her last inspection almost six years ago. The childminder has undertaken very limited training or development opportunities. This means that as well as gaps in her knowledge regarding child protection, her planning and support for children's learning are variable.
p.2
need to do better?
n The childminder demonstrates that she can observe children to assess what they can already do and where they need support. However, she has not developed her curriculum to firmly establish what knowledge, skills and understanding she wants children to acquire. Furthermore, she sometimes plans for children to

13 April 2022 learn things by rote, rather than providing appropriate sequence to what children learn. n At times, the childminder and her assistant provide positive interactions. For example, the assistant reads a familiar story to children. She prompts older children to recall the rhymes. She paces the story well so that younger children can look at the pictures and attempt to say the character names. However, at other times, there is limited support for learning, for example when children play in the sand. The adults take on a mainly supervisory role and children's engagement is brief. n Children are confident in the childminder's home and with visitors. They develop positive relationships with the childminder and her assistant, and they mix well with children of different ages. Children behave well. The childminder is effective at reminding children of the expectations and reinforcing these before they start

an activity. n The childminder and her assistant help children to settle well. They are attentive to the needs of children who have just started. They work with parents and carers to provide consistent support for children's needs. The childminder and her assistant provide a variety of activities so that children have different experiences, such as playing with sand. Children are offered healthy options at mealtimes. n The childminder has regular communication with parents. She gathers information about what children are learning at home and builds on this in her setting. She shares information so that parents are aware of where she is focusing her support.
p.3
Safeguarding
The arrangements for safeguarding are not effective.
p.3
Safeguarding
The childminder and her assistant do not have a suitable knowledge and understanding of some types of abuse and therefore how to recognise concerns. Furthermore, the childminder does not ensure that her assistant is familiar with the procedures for managing concerns or allegations. The childminder does not always check that equipment young children use for sleeping is safe and suitable. Other aspects of the premises are safe. The entrance is secure. The childminder ensures that hazardous items, such as cleaning materials, are out of reach of children. The childminder and her assistant supervise children during play.
