p.1

The provision is good

The childminder has created a welcoming and harmonious setting, which is full of joy and happiness for children. Older children take great care of younger children, playing with them and supporting them in small tasks. The childminder gives the highest priority to children's early experiences. Children spend time in the many outdoor locations around the childminder's home. They look for pretend trolls as they visit a local nature reserve. Children compare changes in the seasons as they embark on their regular trips. As children search for trolls, they notice 'footprints' and the food that trolls eat as they travel through the woodland. This gives children excellent opportunities to develop new language and to express their feelings. They adore splashing in little streams, throwing stones and learning how objects fall downwards. When children become fascinated with bees on the heather in the childminder's garden, the childminder arranges for them to visit a local beekeeper

The provision is good

When children excitedly share their ideas and make predictions, the childminder seizes opportunities to investigate these ideas. For example, when children wonder how many legs a caterpillar has, the childminder facilitates a bug hunt in her garden. Children hunt high and low, delighted when they find and examine small creatures. They compare them on a classification chart, before gently releasing them. Indoors, children relish story time. The childminder uses props and objects to engage children in a story about a hungry caterpillar. Children are so enthralled it is as if nothing else around them exists.

n The childminder's curriculum is driven by children's real experiences and is responsive to their ideas and interests. She consistently takes opportunities in the local environment to support children's learning. For example, when children become interested in a movie being filmed locally, the childminder supports them to recognise the landmarks on the screen before going to visit them. Children have many experiences to enhance their learning, including monthly library visits, trips to see butterfly houses and farms. n Very young children explore the different areas and opportunities at the childminder's home. They crawl and climb in the spacious outside area. Children show deep focus at the water tray where they fill and empty. They play peekaboo in the outdoor playhouse, laughing when they are found by their older friends. This helps to develop their social skills and to build friendships. The childminder gives children enough space to explore while being aware of what

1 September 2022 children who are learning to speak English. For example, when playing with coloured bricks, the childminder models words such as 'yellow cylinder' and 'red cone'. These one-to-one interactions help to develop children's confidence in using language and be eager to communicate orally while playing. However, sometimes, when older children are present, the childminder does not consistently give younger children time to think about their responses or to offer their ideas. n Children have a good ownership of their play environment because the childminder includes them in decisions about the setting. They help to tidy up their toys, working together and enjoying the reward of a marble, which they collect in a 'happy jar' as a result. The childminder uses this reward system to teach children that working well leads to rewards, such as new books and toys to play with. This helps to instil a sense of pride in children.

need to do better?

n Parents have every confidence in the childminder. A culture of open and honest dialogue exists between parents and the childminder, who values their opinions on the service which she provides. For example, the childminder ensures that parents have a say in the way she feeds back to them about the children's learning and care through daily diaries and photos. n Children who are new to the setting settle happily at the childminder's home, following a period of bespoke visits. This ensures that they and their parents feel comfortable in their surroundings before starting officially. n The childminder provides children with healthy and nutritious meals. She involves them in growing and cooking the food which they eat. Children relish the chance to grow fruit, vegetables and flowers in their large outdoor beds, deciding each year what crops to plant. The childminder reminds children to drink water regularly on hot days to keep themselves hydrated and uses stories

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder takes her roles and responsibilities seriously. She knows how to identify if children may be at risk of harm. The childminder knows where and how to report concerns about children's welfare and does not hesitate from taking action to protect children when necessary. The childminder's home is suitable for children's natural desire to explore and remain safe. The childminder ensures the safety of the learning environments and takes good care to plan and risk assess trips in advance of the children visiting. Children's allergies are managed well, further ensuring children's safety.
