This provision is good

 The childminder provides children with a broad range of activities that is well matched to their individual needs and interests. This helps children to be active and motivated learners.  Partnerships with parents are good and strong links are made with home. A strong focus on shared care and learning helps to provide a consistent approach to children's welfare and supports their emotional well-being.  Children are happy and engaged at the childminders. Her effective system for the observation, assessment and tracking of children's development contributes to the good progress they are making across all areas of their learning and development.  The childminder places a strong focus on helping children develop their speaking and listening, social and physical skills. She tracks their progress and achievements successfully and identifies their future learning needs. She is fully aware of how to identify any gaps in children's development.

p.1

This provision is good

 The children form strong bonds with the childminder. They are excited and readily chat to the childminder about their play, seeking her out to support and assist with problem solving.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Although the childminder has made improvements to her provision and the procedures, these are quite new and not yet fully embedded, therefore the full impact on children and her practice is not yet clear.  The childminder has in place a programme for her professional development, but as yet has not consolidated this to set precise targets to help raise teaching and practice to the highest level.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 embed and consolidate the recent changes made to the provision so improvements made are sustained, monitored and there is a strong focus on driving continuous development  build on the programme of professional development to focus more precisely on those areas of the provision that raise teaching and practice to higher levels.

p.2

Inspection activities

 We carried out this inspection as a result of a risk assessment, following information received about this provider.  The inspector observed activities in the lounge and accompanied the childminder on the school run.  The inspector sampled children's assessment records, planning documentation and a range of other records, policies and procedures.  The inspector checked evidence of the childminder's suitability, training certificates and her self-evaluation and improvement plans.  The inspector spoke with the childminder and children throughout the inspection.  The inspector and childminder undertook a joint observation and discussed the children's learning while they were engaged in the activities.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has sought training in safeguarding and fully understands what action to take to protect children. Risk assessments are completed for the home and for all outings. Additionally, the school run is risk assessed and children know to wait until the childminder collects them. The younger children know to hold her hand before they are allowed to move from the car. Management of children's behaviour is good and they are well behaved. The childminder works well with parents and ensures a consistent approach when dealing with children who are less settled. Communication with parents is good as they are invited into the home to discuss their child. The sharing of the children's diary helps to keep parents fully informed and that plans to help children settle are fully agreed. There is precise documentation for ensuring ratios are met. The childminder uses her training to support

children in their development. She has spent time evaluating and improving the setting. Overall she has a good understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of the provision.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Teaching is good. The childminder supports children as she engages in quality discussions with them. Younger children chat with her and this helps build their vocabulary and communication. Older children ask for support in solving problems; she carefully extends their thinking as she encourages them to try. An example of this practice is making the train track; they decide which parts fit together and how to build the bridge. The childminder takes children to toddler groups to help develop their social skills. Older children, for example, climb, enjoy painting and explore the outdoors as they go for walks in the local area. The childminder knows children well and uses her good assessments of them to plan for their individual needs.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are secure and listen to the childminder responding well to instructions. The childminder works well with parents and takes into consideration their wishes to support children's care and welfare. Through activities, such as running, older children are supported with their physical skills. Younger children are supported to reach and crawl when ready, leading to their walking skills. The childminder praises children and this contributes to their motivation and self-confidence. Children are beginning to understand the need to respect each other as they play. For those children whose needs are more complex, the childminder is very clear in what she needs to do to support their ongoing well-being. Children are helped to develop an understanding of good healthy practices and lifestyles and to manage calculated risk.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are making good progress in their learning and development as they are becoming confident and independent. They are active, happy children who demonstrate the characteristics of effective learning as they play. Children are being prepared well for their future learning and for school. They are beginning to develop good relationships with their friends.
