p.1

The provision requires improvement

The childminder is caring and kind towards children and they have formed close bonds with her. She knows them well and generally supports their learning effectively. Children have opportunities for active learning and make choices from the available toys. The childminder provides some enjoyable activities which are based around children's interests, such as arts and crafts and role-play equipment. Children have some opportunities to develop their mathematical skills. For instance, they count the stairs as they go to the bathroom and name the colour of the paint. However, the childminder does not focus sufficiently on what children need to learn during activities or how she can build on what they already know and can do. Consequently, she does not support children's learning as effectively as she could.

p.2

The provision requires improvement

Children become more confident when the childminder encourages them to try tasks for themselves. For example, they are keen to show her that they can take their own coat and boots off. However, she has yet to put in place effective arrangements to support children with their toilet training. Children behave well and demonstrate a positive attitude to their learning. The childminder encourages children and praises them for their achievements. Children show that they are beginning to understand rules and expectations. They demonstrate this as they tidy toys away when they have finished using them.

need to do better?

n Since the previous inspection, the childminder has taken steps to improve her teaching and assessment skills. She has sought support from the local authority early years team and has participated in online training to help to enhance her practice. That said, some areas of practice still require improvement to further support children's outcomes. The childminder observes children and monitors their progress. However, she does not always assess this information accurately. This means that children's next steps in learning are not always precisely identified to help them make the best possible progress. n The childminder talks to children and introduces new vocabulary as they play. However, she does not always help children to move on from using simple words to simple phrases and sentences when talking. Furthermore, she is not consistent in modelling the correct pronunciation of some words. This means

that children do not always hear and learn the correct way to say and use words. n Children enjoy engaging in role play. This helps them to develop their imaginations and begin to make sense of real-life situations. For example, the children try hard to put a nappy on the doll and show care as they pretend to bottle feed it. n The childminder prompts children to follow appropriate hygiene practices. For

6 January 2022 instance, she supervises children as they wash their hands after using the toilet. She talks to them about why it is important to remember to do this. The childminder provides relatively suitable healthy choices during mealtimes. n Children enjoy trips out in their local community, such as to the park and soft- play centre. This allows children to see and experience the world around them and to be physically active. The childminder provides children with opportunities to access resources that reflect the diversity of the world we live in, such as books. This helps to support children's personal development and helps children to develop a positive view of themselves and of others. n The childminder gathers a range of information from parents when their children start attending her setting. This enables her to meet their individual care needs and keep daily routines familiar. The childminder shares information with

parents through a daily diary and during drop-off and collection times. This helps to maintain good continuity in children's care. n The childminder ensures that she has all required policies and procedures in place to help maintain the smooth running of her setting. Sometimes, she works with assistants. The childminder ensures that her assistants attend relevant training with her, such as safeguarding and paediatric first-aid courses. This helps to ensure that her assistants are appropriately qualified and can be left in sole charge of children for short periods.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder has a suitable understanding of the signs and symptoms which could indicate that a child is at risk of harm or abuse. She knows what to do in the event of any concerns to ensure children's safety. She is also aware of the relevant agency to contact in her local authority should an allegation be made against her or a member of her household. The childminder has a secure knowledge of other risks to children, such as the dangers posed by radicalisation or while they are using electronic devices.
