p.2
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
The child has settled well into their home. Her personal items were seen in several communal areas, although there is a lack of photos, which would promote this further. The home is well maintained. It was not seen to be immaculate but it felt homely.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
The child has pets, including a therapy dog, and two rats that live in her bedroom. The garden is small and needs some landscaping as the child would like some space to lie on the grass in the sun. There is a hot tub, which provides the child with the opportunity to relax in warm water. She greatly enjoys being in water and the hot tub provides a calming sensory opportunity for her. She also benefits from several varied experiences, including snorkelling, swimming in the sea and visiting a local stable.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
One child has moved on since the last inspection. They lived at the home for over two years and made significant progress during this time. The move was part of natural progression. They are continuing with their education and remain in contact with staff, and recently met up with some of the team.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
The child who currently lives at this home is happy. She told the inspector, ‘Staff don’t shout at me here to go to my room like at other places, they ask me why I do things and how I feel’. She views the home is ‘outstanding’ and importantly she feels that staff care about her. She was relaxed, happy and chatty during the inspection.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
The child is not currently attending formal education. Education has been sourced for her at the provider’s own school. At this point, she is refusing to attend and would like to go to a mainstream school. Informal learning opportunities are provided at the home. Plans have started to be made, which include the provision of a tutor in conjunction with school.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Overall, safeguarding and safety planning are of a good standard. Due to the high risk and severity of self-harm, support plans around this are evolving to help support the child and to reduce incidents. This has had a positive impact. One incident was not managed well; however, learning has been taken from this and a more nurturing approach promoted.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Self-harm incidents have reduced. The action taken is thorough and robust. Medical attention is promptly sought, when required, and support for the child is nurturing and attentive. Each incident is carefully reviewed by the manager and learning opportunities are consistently taken. This helps staff to understand how to best meet the child’s needs. Inspection report children’s home: SC457567 4 The manager has developed a creative, child-focused behaviour support approach that is based on praise and nurturing. In addition, the child is being supported to enjoy a healthier diet, which is a health need for the child.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
There has been one incident where the child has gone missing from the home. This was well managed, and the appropriate actions were taken. The return home discussion was delayed; however, the manager ensured that this was completed by contacting the relevant professionals numerous times.
p.4
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Safeguards in respect of mobile phone and internet use are lacking. There are no parental controls or restrictions on the child’s internet access. This was raised as an issue by the manager with the placing authority. There is a clear protocol which is based on the child being open and honest, and staff are completing checks on the child’s phone. However, these checks are not robust enough.
p.4
good
There have been numerous changes in the management of the home and a registered manager is not in post. This does not promote consistency and stability for both the child and staff.
p.4
good
The acting manager is providing good oversight of the care provided at the home. He is reflective and nurturing in his approach and is leading the team to provide a good standard of parenting.
p.4
good
Staff are working closely with the local authority and the child and adolescent mental health services to promote a consistent approach. This is having a positive impact on the child. Feedback received from the child’s social worker is positive about the standard of care provided at the home.
p.4
good
Supervision sampled was seen to be thorough and reflective. Training needs are regularly reviewed, and training is provided to ensure that staff have current knowledge which meets the children’s needs.
p.4
good
Case records reflect the child’s everyday life. Overall, they are child centred and often written in conjunction with the child. At times, some institutional language is used. Inspection report children’s home: SC457567 5
