Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
One child recently moved into the home. Planning for the child’s move to the home was good, which ensured that it was a positive experience for the child. One staff member prepared a large welcome hamper. This was happily received by the child, and was not opened by them for several days as they wanted to keep it intact.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
An education package was developed before the child arrived. Importantly, they were able to continue with forest school, which was already in place prior to their move in. They enjoy this part of their education and have also started rugby club, surfing and scootering. The child was observed by the inspector to be comfortable in their home.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
This home is well maintained and provides a welcoming environment for children. Toys scattered on the lounge floor demonstrate a relaxed environment. Personalised touches, such as photographs and a list of the child’s favourite things, help to promote the sense of the home being theirs.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
One child has moved on since the previous inspection. This child made significant progress and was well supported to move on. Staff remain in touch with them.

p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Guidance that enables staff to meet the child’s needs is evolving as the child settles into their home. The manager thoroughly analyses incidents and the actions taken by staff. This reflective approach is promoting a good understanding of the child’s needs.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Boundaries are consistently applied for the child. This has resulted in a recent reduction in the number of incidents that have occurred. The child is also growing increasingly able to manage their emotions without becoming frustrated or angry.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
There have been no allegations made against staff. However, in contrast, two complaints have been made by the manager, regarding adults who are external to the home. This is due to concerns about their responses to the child’s needs.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
An internal investigation was completed due to poor decision-making by one member of staff, which placed two children at risk of harm. The investigation was thorough and recommendations to address shortfalls are clear. Inspection report children’s home: SC456863 4
p.3
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
The acting manager has been fully supported to take over responsibility of the home He is establishing himself in the role and is in the process of applying to become registered.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
The manager challenges other professionals if he considers that they have not acted in the child’s best interests. This demonstrates his commitment and drive to improve standards of care in a wider context.
p.4

Management oversight of practice is good, and reflection is consistently used as a way to improve it. This is enabling staff to learn how to meet the child’s needs in the best way.

The home is fully staffed and recruitment processes in place are used to ensure that staff are suitably vetted.
p.4

Some terminology used in records is institutional and is not appropriate, given the child’s emotional needs. This detracts from the nurturing ethos which is promoted in the home. Inspection report children’s home: SC456863 5
p.4
Recommendation
The registered person should ensure that children’s records are written in a way that supports the child to understand their history, according to their age and understanding.
