p.1

The provision is good

The experienced childminder builds strong relationships with all children in her care. She provides them with a stimulating, well-resourced, caring and safe environment. Children are happy, enjoy their time at the childminder's and are keen learners. They move confidently around the childminder's home, choosing from the range of interesting toys and resources. For example, young children thoroughly enjoy taking the boxes off the shelves and exploring what's inside, until they decide what they want to play with.

p.2

The provision is good

The childminder has high expectations for children and provides them with adult- led activities that follow their interests and enhance their learning. Children become engrossed in these activities and show that they are thoroughly enjoying their play. This is evident as young and older children play with the play dough. They squeeze and poke the dough and use cutters to make animal shapes. They use the dough to create nests and eggs for hens, and use their imaginations as they make dinner of sausages and peas.

p.2

The provision is good

Children show a positive attitude towards their play and learn to concentrate. Older children listen well as they play a sound game. They recognise the sounds they hear and match these to the pictures on their board. They learn to wait patiently for their turn as they play the game and become excited as they match the pictures.

need to do better?

n The childminder is very organised. She implements policies and procedures to ensure the effective organisation of her provision. The childminder completes training to keep up to date with guidance and legislation. However, there is scope for her to focus her professional development on continuing to enhance her teaching skills to the highest level. n The childminder completes ongoing self-evaluation and takes account of parents' feedback. She regularly reflects on her resources and adds to them to support children's emerging interests. For example, she has introduced tubes that are attached to wood, to help enhance children's curiosity during water play. n Partnerships with parents are strong. The childminder provides daily communication diaries to help parents see what their children have enjoyed doing throughout the day. She shares children's assessments with them and asks for their views. She involves parents in setting children's next steps and

14 January 2020 play. The childminder knows the children well and understands what she needs to do to help them move on to the next stage of their learning. She observes children to assess their development and provides a broad range of activities which enhance all areas of learning. However, occasionally, the childminder misses opportunities to extend and develop children's understanding of mathematics. n The childminder has a passion for supporting children to flourish in her care. She gathers information from parents about the children's current experiences. The childminder adds to their experiences to help children develop skills that will support their future learning. For example, she provides children with opportunities to visit places in the community, such as the library, and to take part in group sessions. This helps their social skills and extends their enjoyment of books. n Children learn about diversity and enjoy a wide range of experiences which help

them to understand and respect differences between themselves and others. These include playing with multicultural resources and celebrating religious festivals from around the world. For example, in the summer, children have the opportunity to celebrate a Japanese festival. This celebration encourages children to make wishes and weave coloured ribbons onto bamboo trees for good luck. n Children behave well. The childminder encourages them to be kind and share, and focuses her attention on them having fun, being friends and learning well. Children demonstrate that they feel safe as they frequently laugh and play with confidence and independence. n The childminder promotes a healthy lifestyle. She encourages children to follow a good hygiene procedure and to clean their teeth. She provides healthy meals and children grow strawberries to learn about where food comes from. Children have opportunities to be active and exercise daily. For example, they play in the

Safeguarding

The childminder and her assistant have secure knowledge relating to child protection. They understand how to identify and respond appropriately to any concerns about a child's welfare. They attend training to update their knowledge of the wider issues of safeguarding children. The childminder checks the suitability of her assistant to ensure they are suitable to work with children. She knows what to do if there is an allegation made against herself, her family or her assistant. The childminder carries out checks of her home and always maintains a safe and secure environment.
