p.1

The provision is good

Children are confident to engage with adults, and they show curiosity and enjoyment as they explore their environment. The childminder provides a broad range of learning resources for children. Consequently, children are well supported across all areas of learning and development during the early years foundation stage. The childminder provides a rich language environment for children. She interacts skilfully and enthusiastically with them to help build their understanding and speech. Consequently, children are making good progress in their language acquisition. Children are highly motivated in their learning and have high respect for each other. The childminder has exceptional behavioural expectations of all children and models this behaviour for children to follow. Consequently, children behave extremely well and show good manners, like saying 'please' and 'thank you'. The childminder provides a home from home for children. Children settle well

and have strong bonds of attachment with the childminder. Children, therefore, look forward to attending the setting each day. The childminder's teaching is good. However, her continuous professional development is not sharply focused on raising the quality of teaching to an outstanding level. As a result, activities are occasionally not challenging enough for children.

need to do better?

n The childminder accurately establishes children's starting points and assesses and tracks their progress. She identifies children's next steps in learning and plans play to help close any gaps in their development effectively. All children make good or better progress from their starting points. n The childminder's continuous professional training is not sharp enough to ensure that weaknesses in teaching are promptly addressed. While the quality of teaching is good overall, it is not as effective as it could be. n Children enjoy a broad curriculum and are well supported in their development. This contributes to children's exceptional behaviour and personal development. n The childminder ensures that the immediate environment is clean, tidy and secure. She carries out frequent risk assessment checks. She identifies and takes action to reduce and minimise all hazards. This helps to keep children safe.

p.2

need to do better?

n The childminder promotes equality and inclusion in the setting. Children have access to learning resources from different cultural backgrounds and learn about people and communities in the wider world. n The childminder builds good partnerships with the pre-school that children attend. She exchanges information about children's achievements with parents and the key persons at the pre-school. This helps to provide consistency and continuity in children's learning. n Parents are very complimentary about the childminder. For example, they say that she is very flexible and works to support them with any challenges arising

9 January 2020 from their children's development. Furthermore, they find the childminder approachable, knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. n The childminder talks to children about the risk of inappropriate touching using 'pant talks' to start conversation about human body parts. Children, therefore, are beginning to think about managing the risk of inappropriate touching and this contributes very well to their personal development. n The childminder teaches children the language of feelings and supports them in empathising with one another and in expressing their feelings. To assist children with this, the childminder provides the 'worry monster' puppet and books such as 'What is going on in my head?' and 'What I am feeling today'. These help to support children in managing their feelings and emotions. n The childminder is highly ambitious and uses feedback from both children and parents to continuously improve on her provision.

p.2

need to do better?

n Children listen and respond well, and they learn to recall familiar words and phrases.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder makes sure procedures, including safeguarding and first-aid training, are up to date to secure children's safety and well-being. She understands the processes and procedures to follow if she has concerns about any children in her care. The childminder has robust risk assessments in place to keep children safe during indoor and outdoor activities. She has a secure understanding of wider safeguarding issues, such as female genital mutilation and the 'Prevent' duty. Consequently, she knows what processes to follow to keep children safe.

p.3

should:

n provide more opportunities that challenge children's learning to the highest levels n focus professional development more effectively on enhancing teaching and raising the already good-quality learning experiences for all children to the best possible level.
