p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: outstanding

The two children who live at this home have lived here for several years. They have made significant progress and are both due to return to the care of their families very soon.

p.4

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: outstanding

The children have been fully supported in their development by the consistently high standard of parenting provided by the registered manager and his staff team. This has led to very positive outcomes for both children. One child is in full-time employment, has a long-term boyfriend and is now demonstrating an ability to keep herself safe. The other child is fully engaged with their education and is achieving well. His emotional resilience has been nurtured and he is growing increasingly able to manage difficult feelings.

p.4

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: outstanding

No staff have left since the last inspection. This has meant that the children benefit from consistent relationships with staff. The children’s individual needs are fully understood by the registered manager and his staff team. Care planning is excellent and consistently evolves to support the children’s changing needs.

p.4

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: outstanding

The planning for children to move on is excellent. The registered manager works closely with families to promote the best outcomes for children. Parents have also been involved in key training at the home to enhance their skills to meet the ongoing needs of their children. Another example is the support provided to one child to reduce any negative impact of changes to his school transport when he moves home. The staff have been taking the child to his mum’s house so that the school taxi can start collecting him from her address. This has helped to lessen his anxiety around his new routine.

p.4

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Safeguarding is managed well, and any concerns are addressed effectively. When required, the responses to concerns are well coordinated and robust. This has significantly lessened the negative impact on children at times of crisis.

p.4

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Children are fully supported to gain their independence and have been supported to develop these skills safely. For example, one child has been helped to gain their moped licence, which has given them age-appropriate freedom.

p.4

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Both children have developed greater emotional resilience. However, at times when required, the appropriate expert support is accessed in a timely manner.

p.4

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Children’s health needs, overall, are met to a good standard. The registered manager acts in the same way as a good parent. For example, the older child is now in a stable relationship, and this is understood as a natural part of her development. She has been supported to keep herself safe and to maintain a healthy relationship. Inspection report children’s home: SC467704 5 The guidance provided for staff and children in the event of a fire lacks clarity. Staff spoken with during the inspection did not have consistent views on the actions which should be taken if there were a fire which blocked the designated exit.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The registered manager has created an ethos of high expectations and aspirations for the children in his care.

p.5

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The registered manager is a strong advocate for children. He has ensured that children’s care arrangements have been stable for many years. For example, children have not been moved to other homes within the organisation which could have jeopardised their progress.

p.5

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

Necessary action is taken following any incidents to ensure that the needs of children are met and that the children are safe and protected.

p.5

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

Recruitment practice is safe, and record-keeping, overall, is of a high standard. Case records reflect the children’s lives well and clearly demonstrate their progress and achievements.

p.5

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

Supervision is regular and comprehensive, for both staff and the registered manager. This promotes good practice in all areas and drives improvement.

p.5

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The environment is maintained to a good standard. The home feels and looks like a family home. There are lots of photographs around the home, which further enhances the sense of belonging for children. Inspection report children’s home: SC467704 6

Information about this inspection

Inspectors have looked closely at the experiences and progress of children and young people. Inspectors considered the quality of work and the difference made to the lives of children and young people. They watched how professional staff work with children and young people and each other and discussed the effectiveness of help and care provided. Wherever possible, they talked to children and young people and their families. In addition, the inspectors have tried to understand what the children’s home knows about how well it is performing, how well it is doing and what difference it is making for the children and young people whom it is trying to help, protect and look after.
