p.1
The provision is good
The childminder embraces the use of natural and household items in children's play to encourage their imagination. Children become engrossed when playing with cardboard tubes and metal tins. They use them as musical instruments and are delighted at how the childminder's voice changes when she speaks into a long metal biscuit tin. However, on some occasions, she does not give children time to make their own decisions about what they would like to do. The childminder uses everyday events to help children learn about the world. For example, as a refuse truck pulls up outside, she takes children to the window. She talks to them about what goes in the truck, how slowly it drives and how the orange lights on the back of the truck signal danger. The childminder is very responsive to children's needs. For example, as children become tired and a little upset, she picks them up and cuddles them. She talks to them soothingly about their family members until they

fall asleep. The childminder takes on board information from parents regarding their children's interests and strives to cater for them. For example, she regularly acquires books from the library to satisfy children's fondness for reading. However, the childminder does not regularly seek parents' views regarding children's ongoing development or achievements at home.

need to do better?
n The childminder has fully addressed the action and recommendation from the previous inspection. She now assesses risks effectively to keep children safe, and children can now more easily access resources. n The childminder is keen to use every opportunity to help children learn. However, she does not always give children time to think of answers to questions she has asked or time to think about what they would like to explore. n The childminder supports children's language development very well. She consistently models speech as children play. For instance, she narrates what they are doing and how they might be feeling, such as suggesting that they might need a drink when they wake up. This helps children to verbalise how they feel and what they need. n The childminder implements routines and initiates conversations that help children learn about hygiene and good health. Children happily wash their hands

before lunch and the childminder talks to them about the healthy foods they have in their lunchbox. n The childminder encourages mathematical development throughout the day. For example, children count the pieces of cheese they have at lunchtime. n The childminder is keen to ensure that children are well prepared for school. She supports them to socialise with other children who will attend the same school so that they build friendships. She also helps children to develop their independence. Children learn how to put on their own shoes and coats and

15 October 2019 begin to take responsibility for their own belongings. n The childminder considers children's learning carefully and recognises the areas where they need more support. For example, she identifies children's reluctance to be involved in messy play. She understands the physical benefits of such play and introduces short sessions until they become more comfortable taking part. n The childminder is keen to expand her knowledge and enhance her practice. She researches ideas and accesses training to continually improve and develop. For example, she learns from webinars that children's core strength is developed when they stand and paint at an easel, instead of sitting down. She adapts her painting resources to embrace this new knowledge. n The childminder helps children to consider other cultures as well as their own. They look at similarities and differences when looking at books and talk about

the different people they meet in the community. n The childminder shares her assessments of children with parents, but parents are not asked to contribute their views about children's development on a regular basis. This means that the childminder is unaware of some of the milestones that children may achieve at home.
p.3
Safeguarding
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.
p.3
Safeguarding
The childminder puts measures in place to make sure that her safeguarding knowledge is strong. For example, she invites the local authority to audit her safeguarding procedures and regularly tests her own knowledge through online training facilities. The childminder knows how to identify signs and symptoms of abuse. She is clear about the procedures for reporting any concerns she may have about a child or adult.

should:
n enhance opportunities for children to think for themselves, for example to answer questions posed to them and make decisions about what they would like to do n strengthen ways to encourage parents to share what they know about children's ongoing development and achievements at home.
