p.1

The provision requires improvement

The childminder has worked with young children for many years and recognises the value of building positive relationships with parents and children. She regularly speaks to parents about their children and although she completes assessments of children's progress, she has not provided parents with a written progress check for all children aged between two and three years. The childminder knows each child well and has effective systems in place to help them settle quickly. She provides children with affection and supports their emotional well-being while responding well to children's interests. The childminder speaks clearly to children and asks incisive questions, giving children the time they need to respond. However, their access to books is limited and they do not get enough opportunities to develop a love of reading. Children are happy and confident in the childminder's home, and overall she takes sufficient steps to provide a safe environment for them to enjoy.

p.2

The provision requires improvement

Children play cooperatively and learn to resolve disputes amicably. The childminder supports children to build secure friendships. As a result, children have good social skills and behave well. Although the childminder understands most aspects of the early years curriculum to enable her to plan to support children's learning, she has not identified effective ways to extend children's understanding of different people and communities beyond their own experiences.

need to do better?

n The childminder has made some progress since the last inspection. She has addressed previous recommendations and actions set. She is working with the local authority to evaluate her practice and make changes. However, the childminder does not have a clear improvement plan in place. As a result, she has not made rapid enough progress. n The childminder has a wide range of resources. However, these are not organised in a way that best supports children's learning. Children can see resources stored inside plastic boxes, but they become frustrated when they cannot access these toys independently. n Although the childminder has a wide range of books, these are not accessible to children because they are stored in boxes. Additionally, the childminder does not routinely use books to support children's wider learning. Parents comment that they would like more support with their children's early reading skills.

p.2

need to do better?

n Children listen carefully to the childminder's instructions. They say 'please' and 'thank you', often without prompt. Children treat toys with care and tidy up when asked. The childminder has a clear knowledge of how to promote positive behaviour, and children understand the consistent rules and boundaries she sets. This supports children to learn to have respect and consideration for others. n The childminder ensures she has all the necessary information she needs from

She obtains the necessary consents to administer medication and take children on outings. n The childminder understands how to support children's learning and plan their next steps. However, she is not able to demonstrate whether children require any early intervention because she has not completed the statutory written assessment required for children aged between two and three years. n Parents say that they feel very well supported by the childminder and that they are very happy with her approach to behaviour management. Parents comment that the childminder suggests strategies to support positive behaviour at home. n At times, the childminder does not identify and minimise all risks and hazards to children. For example, plastic bags are within reach and boxes of toys are stacked precariously. However, the risks to children are minimised because the

childminder closely supervises them throughout the day. n The childminder engages with local authority professionals to improve her practice. She recently attended a training course on improving the external learning environment. As a result, she has taken steps to make significant improvements to her garden and increased opportunities for children to learn outside.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder's knowledge of safeguarding procedures is secure. She knows how to identify and respond to child protection concerns. She knows who to contact should she have any concerns about the welfare of a child. The childminder knows who to contact if an allegation is made. She has completed training on the risks of extremist views. The childminder teaches children to manage risk. For example, they learn to cross the road safely.
