Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This is a provision that requires improvement

n The childminder does not evaluate her service sufficiently well. For example, she does not review her training needs or check that policies include the required information. n The learning needs of some children are not met. Children are not always given learning opportunities that provide them with sufficient challenge throughout the day and they have few opportunities to play outdoors. Children do not consistently achieve as well as they could, given their starting points. n The childminder does not take action when alerted to weaknesses, such as the failure to display her registration certificate. n Children are not given enough opportunities to celebrate their own culture and heritage, and to learn about those around them. n Although the childminder develops good relationships with parents, she does not fully support them to build on children's learning at home.

p.1

It has the following strengths

n The childminder provides resources that children access independently and enjoy using. n The childminder implements some procedures effectively, such as risk assessments and dealing with accidents. This helps to ensure children's safety. n The childminder builds warm bonds with children who show that they feel happy and secure in her care. Their emotional well-being is supported well. n Parents give positive feedback about the childminder's service and the consistent care that she gives to children. They appreciate the social skills that children acquire.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

n enhance opportunities for children to understand and value their heritage and background, and those of other communities and cultures n build on existing partnerships with parents, so that communication shared about children's experiences helps them to better understand how to support children's learning at home.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

n The inspector reviewed documents, including registers, policies and records related to children's safety and health. n The inspector observed the childminder's interactions with children and activities provided, and assessed the impact of these on children's learning. n The inspector spoke with the childminder at appropriate times and took account of the views of parents. n The inspector observed an activity that took place with the children and discussed this with the childminder.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder does not monitor her service effectively and fails to identify her training needs. Although a range of resources are available, the childminder does not plan activities that provide sufficient challenge for children. This hinders them from making the progress of which they are capable. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder is able to identify the potential risks posed to children. She knows the procedures to follow if she has concerns about a child. The childminder is clear about what to do in the event of an allegation being made but does not check that her safeguarding policy contains information about this. The childminder works well with parents to ensure that children's well-being is protected. However, regular communication does not lead to support for parents to engage in children's learning at home. The childminder takes steps to ensure that children are safe and secure.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder does not provide activities that fully meet children's needs. She does not ensure that some activities are sufficiently challenging. She does not closely monitor the needs of children who learn best outdoors. However, the childminder knows the children well and is aware of their interests. She supports toddlers to enhance their developing communication and language skills. She names items, repeats words and asks questions to check their understanding. The childminder helps children to develop an interest in books. She encourages them to turn pages and they explore the pictures together. Toddlers demonstrate that they understand how to make things work, such as when they press buttons to hear animal sounds. This also helps them to learn about technology and its different uses.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

Overall, children behave well. However, when activities are not sufficiently challenging or fail to meet their needs, they sometimes become boisterous. For example, children wait for long periods after snack with nothing to do. Children show that they form close bonds with the childminder. They seek her out for comfort and reassurance when they are hurt or upset. The childminder has failed to update her recently expired first-aid qualification. Although she demonstrates an understanding of how to respond to medical emergencies, this does not fully assure children's welfare. The childminder uses information provided by parents to cater for children's individual care needs. However, opportunities for children to celebrate their heritage and learn about other cultures are limited. The childminder speaks with children about how to keep themselves safe and implements effective handwashing strategies. This helps children to develop good

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Children play well together, develop their social skills and learn about how to stay healthy and safe. However, they are not meaningfully engaged consistently throughout the day. Children who enjoy more active play have few opportunities to learn outdoors. Children are not always able to practise the skills they need to move on to their next stage of learning.
