One young person lives in this home, and she has made significant progress in all areas since the last inspection. Staff provide individualised care and support, and this has contributed recently to a smooth transition into school and re-establishment of family visits. The registered manager devises and oversees plans using visual aids to break stages into achievable steps which move at the young person’s pace. This has a positive result, helping her to manage anxiety and enjoy new experiences, including a day trip to London with staff.

p.4

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

The registered manager works with the local authority to confirm the care plan for the young person. This enables her to invest in her care and school placements. Staff are also introducing the future move to independence so that, with sufficient preparation, the young person will be ready for this transition.

p.4

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

A consistent and skilled staff team cares for the young person. Staff speak openly with the young person about things that are important to her. She explores her experiences and identity in a safe way with staff. The home creates a nurturing environment which, according to the young person’s social worker, has given her a sense of belonging and support to find herself.

p.4

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

The young person has a positive relationship with both the registered manager and staff, and she expresses her views directly to them. The young person knows how to complain. Staff anticipate her needs and emotional state. The inspector observed staff encouraging the young person to use art and storytelling to communicate how she is feeling.

p.4

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

The young person maintains good health. Staff have developed effective relationships with health professionals. This has included the nurse offering double appointments to allow staff time to support the young person to manage her anxiety before receiving immunisations.

p.4

The home is warm and welcoming for young people. Blankets, toys and books are available to help the young person to settle. Photographs around the house allow the young person to remember her family and build new memories.

They understand triggers and can therefore de-escalate to encourage emotional regulation.

p.4

There are no ‘missing’ incidents, despite occasions when the young person displays challenging behaviour linked to her previous trauma and current emotional state. This evidences that the young person feels safe at home with staff, who can safeguard by knowing and anticipating her behaviour.

p.5

The young person successfully uses a colour-coded system to request support from staff when she is unable to express herself using words. Staff have confidently embedded this system into life at the home. The young person, as a result, has improved emotional regulation, with reduced incidents of self-harm and physical intervention.

p.5

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Staff encourage the young person to prepare for independence, and she enjoys cooking. Staff balance taking age-appropriate risks against the need to safeguard her vulnerability. They involve others in making decisions about the young person’s care and ensure that they work in her best interests.

p.5

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

The registered manager safely recruits staff working at the home and does not use agency staff. Staff are therefore familiar, which provides consistent care to help and protect the young person.
