p.1

The provision requires improvement

Children enjoy their time playing and express a keen interest in exploring sensory materials, such as sand and water. They eagerly dig up toy animals that are hidden in the sand. Some children comment on the elephant's 'sharp tusks' and 'long trunk'. Children enjoy learning about animals and point out familiar animals on a world map. However, the childminder does not adapt her teaching well enough to focus on what children need to learn next, such as their speaking skills and independence. As a result, there are not high enough expectations for every child.

p.2

The provision requires improvement

Children are happy and sociable. The childminder teaches them the importance of using good manners, such as saying 'please' and 'thank you'. However, she does not consistently use effective behaviour strategies to help children to understand what is expected of them. There are plenty of opportunities for children to enjoy drawing and colouring pictures using pencils. They eagerly show their work to the childminder who praises their efforts and achievements.

p.2

The provision requires improvement

Children excitedly look forward to regular outings, such as to the local park. They visit local places of interest, such as museums and libraries. Children are happy and confident and have built good relationships with the childminder and each other.

n The childminder values children's interests and facilitates these in their play. However, she does not use her knowledge of children's development to ensure teaching matches what they need to learn next. Children lose interest in some activities which lack challenge. As a result, they do not make the progress of which they are capable. n Parents praise the childminder and comment positively on the home-from-home environment and the nurturing care children receive. The childminder shares regular information with parents about their child's learning and encourages them to continue to support this at home. n The childminder supports children's early mathematical awareness of numbers. For example, she helps them to count blocks in order and everyday items, such as the pieces of fruit they have for their snack. Children skilfully compare and identify 'bigger' and 'smaller' towers. n The childminder provides consistent reminders for children to help them to learn

about personal safety. For example, she reminds children to tidy up after playing to avoid tripping over toys. Children comment that they must be careful when using knives to chop their fruit for their snack. n Some children enjoy choosing and singing their favourite songs with the childminder. However, she does not provide enough opportunities for them to extend and build on their speaking skills.

p.2

need to do better?

3 September 2019 n The childminder has a positive attitude and is dedicated to improving the quality of her provision. However, some aspects of leadership are not good. The childminder has not provided Ofsted with the required information to enable it to complete suitability checks for all household members. This has minimal impact to children's safety as the household members do not work with children. The childminder has started to take action to address this weakness. n The childminder makes effective use of home visits to help children to settle quickly and gets to know children and their families well. Close support and supervision help to boost children's confidence and social skills. Children play well together and are motivated to join in with activities. However, the childminder does not use consistent strategies to help children to manage their behaviour more independently. n The childminder and her assistants complete mandatory training and carry out
