The childminder is caring and highly effective in helping children to settle in quickly. She supports their emotional well-being. For example, she facilitates daily discussions about feelings and emotions when children choose personalised pictures to indicate if they are feeling happy, sad, excited or tired. n The childminder has improved the way she evaluates the quality of practice and accurately identifies areas to make continued improvements. She has worked closely with local authority support and seeks the views of parents, children and assistants when making changes to her practice. n The childminder provides a range of fun and exciting activities for children. outdoor area is particularly well resourced and stimulating. Children have great fun exploring the garden. For instance, they are highly interested in the outdoor 'ice-cream shop'. They play well together as they pretend to make and sell different flavoured ice creams. n Parents highly praise the childminder and comment that she goes 'above and beyond' to provide their children with high-quality care. They comment on how children 'feel at home' and 'are happy and settled'. They state that she is an 'integral part' of their child's development. n The childminder helps children learn how to take risks safely and the importance of keeping themselves safe. For example, children remark how mushrooms can be poisonous and they check equipment is dry and safe to use after it has been raining. n Occasionally, the childminder and her assistants do not use their questioning skills to fully enhance children's wider vocabulary and language.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

The childminder has focused effectively on her professional development and that of her assistants. She has a training programme in place to develop their ongoing skills and knowledge. The childminder and her assistants observe each other's practice and give constructive feedback to ensure they improve the quality of children's experiences. The childminder has robust recruitment procedures in place and ensures the suitability of her assistants. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder and her assistants have a secure understanding of how to keep children safe. They know how to recognise and follow the correct reporting procedures if they have any concerns about a child's welfare. The childminder and her assistants carry out regular risk assessments to ensure children learn and play in a safe environment.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder and her assistants supervise and guide children's learning closely. The childminder supports children's mathematical skills well. Older children are able to count in order and recognise numerals during a number hunt game. Younger children sing number songs using their fingers to count. They spend prolonged time in play as they delight in filling and pouring sand into containers. The childminder monitors children's progress carefully and plans a range of interesting activities to support their learning. For example, children eagerly explore and compare the different properties of fruit, such as the smell, taste and texture. The childminder shares regular information and updates with parents and other settings which children attend. This promotes continuity of care and learning for children.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder supports children to become independent and manage self-care and hygiene tasks appropriate for their age. For instance, children routinely dry outdoor equipment with small towels after it has been raining. They learn to put their coats and shoes on and wash their hands after using the toilet. The childminder provides healthy snacks and meals for children and reminds them to drink water regularly on a warm day. The childminder is calm and patient in her approach. She reminds children about the importance of using good manners. Children's behaviour is good. They are respectful and show kindness to each other. Children develop their physical skills as they use the climbing frame and learn to use skipping ropes.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are developing confidence in their communication and language skills. Older children have lively conversations as they talk about aliens and outer space. Younger children babble and copy the sounds of farm animals. Older children proudly demonstrate that they can spell and write their name as they register their attendance in the morning. Children of varying ages enjoy group activities, such as a bingo game where they carefully observe and patiently wait their turn as they match picture cards to their board. All children enjoy spending time looking at books and this encourages an early interest in reading. They gain important skills in preparation for their future, including being ready for school.
