p.1

This provision is good

n The childminder provides a warm, friendly and positive environment. She is attentive to children's individual needs and has developed close bonds with them. This helps to provide a strong foundation for children's learning and development and promotes their emotional well-being. n The childminder promotes children's understanding of mathematics during their play and everyday routines. For instance, she counts with the children and encourages them to identify different shapes. n Parents appreciate the individual support and attention the childminder provides for their children. They comment that the childminder is 'great and caring'. n Children have plenty of opportunities to practise the physical skills they need to help support their future writing. For example, they use cutters and rolling pins. n The childminder has not established a focused programme of professional development to raise the quality of teaching to an outstanding level.

p.1

This provision is good

n The assessments of children's progress are insufficiently precise to identify what children need to learn next in all areas of learning. n Although completed, the childminder does not give parents a written summary of the progress check for children aged between two and three years.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

n The inspector observed the quality of teaching and assessed the impact this had on children's learning. n The inspector talked to children and the childminder throughout the inspection. n The inspector sampled documentation, including policies, suitability checks and children's records. n The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder. n The inspector viewed testimonials from parents and took account of the views expressed.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has appropriate knowledge of safeguarding practice and understands the systems to follow if there are concerns about a child's welfare. She assesses the risks to children's safety, indoors and outdoors, to ensure children are safe as they play. The childminder has documentation and policies in place which underpin her good practice. She makes sure that all mandatory training is kept up to date. Parents are pleased with the quality of care provided by the childminder. They comment that their children's social skills and manners have improved since attending the setting. The childminder takes into account the views of parents and children to review her practice and to continually provide a good service.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Children play confidently in a welcoming, friendly environment. The childminder provides opportunities for children to explore a good range of interesting, age-appropriate resources. She skilfully enhances children's learning as they play. For example, children's attention was drawn to different textures and different ways to mould dough. She introduces children to early mathematical concepts. For example, children counted as they played, talked about shapes as they used dough cutters, and about sizes, big and small, as they looked through binoculars. The childminder engages well with children. She encourages them to develop their language skills and vocabulary as they talk about, and find, objects in a story book. Children listen carefully and follow instructions appropriately.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children learn the importance of healthy lifestyles as the childminder embeds this into everyday routines. For example, young children learn to wash and dry their hands before eating. The childminder consistently encourages children in all that they do. She celebrates children's achievements, and they develop good self-esteem. Children enjoy learning, listen well and are eager to explore and share their ideas with the childminder. Children are gaining independence. For example, they learn to make choices and to select from a range of safe and suitable resources.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are eager learners who make good progress. Early mathematical skills are taught well, so children learn about the vocabulary of shapes, sizes and colours. Children are able to choose and make decisions about what, and where, they would like to play, and they are encouraged to help with tidying up once they have finished with an activity. They use good manners and understand what is expected of them. Children develop confidence and independence, which helps to prepare them well for their next steps in learning and eventual move on to school.
