manners. n The childminder provides exciting, real-life experiences for children to extend their knowledge of the world. For example, they look for signs of spring when they are out and about. They learn about the life cycle of the butterfly as they excitedly watch caterpillars grow and change. n The childminder is vigilant about children's safety. She takes all the necessary steps to make sure children are kept safe in her home, outside and on outings. Regular fire drills are carried out and risk assessments are thorough. The childminder supports children in keeping themselves safe, such as wearing hats on sunny days. n At times, the childminder does not make the best use of opportunities to encourage children to do more for themselves and extend their independence even further. n Parents are not consistently encouraged to share information about children's learning at home.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

The childminder provides a clean, well-organised and welcoming environment where children can play safely. She recognises the impact that training has on her practice, and completes relevant courses to support her in her role. She regularly meets with other childminders to share ideas. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder fully understands her responsibility to safeguard children, and knows what to do if she is concerned about a child's welfare. She shares her policies and procedures with parents when they register their children with her. This helps parents to understand her role as a childminder and her statutory responsibilities. The childminder establishes good partnerships with other settings children attend by sharing regular information. This helps to provide continuity in their care and learning. Parents are kept informed about their children's progress. They comment that they are very happy with the care the childminder provides.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder plans age-appropriate activities that excite and challenge children. For example, she has created a fascinating mud kitchen, where children enjoy the sensory experience of making 'pies' and 'potions'. Each child has their own delightful learning journey book. It includes annotated photographs, showing the many activities they take part in, and the good progress they are making. Children's communication and language skills are developing rapidly. They learn new words as they talk constantly with the childminder. Children develop the small muscles in their hands as they thread beads and use tweezers to pick up small pom-poms. They explore the texture of play dough and use tools to cut and shape it. The childminder makes good use of the local library, playgroups and parks to widen children's experiences and develop their social skills.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder provides settling-in sessions that meet children's individual needs. Children become confident and self-assured. They demonstrate they feel comfortable and safe in the childminder's care. She ensures that they have a positive experience when they separate from their parents. Children develop strong, caring relationships with the childminder, her family and each other. The childminder effectively supports children's health. They enjoy healthy meals, rest when needed and join in with physical activities. They are beginning to show care and concern for living things. For example, they like to fill the bird feeders in the garden.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children benefit from the positive interactions, encouragement and support that they receive from the childminder. They are becoming more confident and self-assured as they make their own choices during play. Children develop good communication skills. They listen to the childminder and follow instructions carefully. They are helpful and tidy away resources when they have finished with them. Children learn to count, write their names and learn the sounds that letters make. They thoroughly enjoy their time with the childminder, and are developing good skills and attitudes that prepare them well for their next stages of learning, including starting school.
