This provision is good
The childminder's extremely positive approach to her own professional development is admirable. Through a variety of ways she has improved her knowledge and skills, helping her to support children's learning effectively. The standard of teaching is good. The childminder knows how to enhance children's learning as they take part in activities together and in doing so, prepares them well for school. The childminder knows children well and tracks their development carefully. Observations are used effectively to plan challenging next steps in learning that will motivate children further. Strong parental partnerships are central to the work of the childminder. When first starting, she obtains detailed information about what children already know and can do, together with their care needs. Parents are well informed of children's progress and their opinions are frequently sought about how she can improve her service further.
p.1
This provision is good
Good settling-in procedures are in place, helping children become accustomed to their new surroundings and meeting new friends. The childminder is skilled at building strong emotional bonds with children adding to their sense of security when in her care.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
It is not always possible for children to independently access and choose their own playthings from the wide range the childminder has on offer.
p.1
What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

find additional ways for children to choose their own toys and resources, helping them to independently initiate, plan and lead their own play.
p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector discussed a planned activity with the childminder. The inspector spoke with the childminder and children at appropriate times throughout the inspection. She looked at relevant documentation, such as self-evaluation and evidence of the suitability of household members. The inspector read questionnaires and letters from parents and took account of their views.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder is well trained to identify and report concerns she may have about children in her care. A good range of policies and procedures are in place to support her work including robust risk assessments regarding fire safety in the home. The childminder teaches children about protecting themselves from harm, especially when they take walks or visit the local area. The childminder uses self-evaluation effectively to continually identify areas where she excels or where further improvements are needed to benefit children. Partnerships with other providers are good and promote a two-way flow of information where children divide their time between the two.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
Children demonstrate good levels of concentration during activities the childminder has planned for them. They take great care choosing the different resources needed to make marks and name which colour paints they require. Children show great dexterity and control as they create a picture of a spider, recognising the need to paint straight lines to represent the legs. Through skilful interventions, the childminder promotes learning whenever possible. For example, the childminder encourages children to count the legs on the spider and the number of pine cones or pieces of pasta they are using. Children are also introduced to the concept of more than and less than which is contributing to the development of their early mathematical understanding. The childminder shares ideas for activities with parents, helping them to enhance children's learning at home.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children have plenty of opportunities to enjoy fresh air and exercise both at home and when they visit the local area. The childminder helps children to gain coordination and physical abilities, such as using the swing for the first time. This boosts their self- confidence and enables them to use the play equipment safely and without fear. The childminder works with parents to ensure children's dietary needs are met and children learn about healthy foods during meal and snack times. The childminder guides children to establishing positive behaviours, such as good manners, from the outset. Her gentle reminders and explanations support children well in understanding what is not acceptable.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children are confident and keen to learn. During delightful conversations with the childminder, they demonstrate good communication skills and are eager to share their thoughts and ideas as they play. The childminder supports children to be independent in their self-care skills and begins to introduce them to routines, such as group story time, in preparation for their eventual moves to school. Overall, children make good progress in the care of the childminder.
