Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder is aware of the procedure to follow should she have any concerns about the welfare of a child. She demonstrates a good knowledge of the signs and symptoms that may indicate a child is at risk from harm. The childminder ensures that potential hazards that children may encounter are minimised. She supervises children well at all times. The childminder has secured effective partnerships with local schools. For example, she invites teachers into the setting prior to children starting at the school to promote a smooth and consolidated transfer for children. Parents are extremely happy with the care and learning opportunities that the childminder provides for their children. They are delighted with the progress that their children make.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Overall, teaching is good. The childminder uses her knowledge and understanding of how children learn to provide well-planned and inspiring activities. She very effectively differentiates activities to ensure that both younger and older children are captivated and engaged in their play. For example, the childminder demonstrates to older children how to thread a piece of string through the hole in pieces of coloured pasta to make a necklace. They show high levels of persistence and perseverance as they achieve the task. Meanwhile, the childminder shows younger children how to drop a straw through a tube. Likewise, the younger children show determination in achieving the goal. The childminder constantly talks to children to promote their developing vocabulary. For example, as children are playing in the sand, she offers commentary to their play.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder provides children with a calm and relaxed environment. She enables children to initiate their own play as all resources are freely available to them. The childminder supports children's emotional well-being very effectively. Children show that they are comfortable and secure in her care. They have formed a close attachment to her. The childminder helps children to develop their independence and self-care skills. For example, even very young children show great ability in feeding themselves during mealtimes. The childminder helps children to learn about safety through their imaginary play. She explains to children that they must do up the straps of the dolls buggies to stop the dolls from falling out. Children listen to her and follow her instructions. The childminder provides opportunities for children to develop an awareness of their local community, such a visits to the fire station and walks in the park.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children are making typical progress from their initial starting points in their learning. They are developing good social skills and interact well with adults and with each other. Children show enthusiasm and enjoyment in the opportunities that are made available to them. They are developing key skills to prepare them for the next stage in their learning, including starting school.
