good practice in order to benefit children's learning. n Occasionally, the childminder does not further extend children's language and thinking to deepen their learning. n At times, the childminder misses some opportunities to help children manage tasks for themselves so that they become more independent in their learning.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

n The inspector observed the childminder and children playing. n The inspector sampled the childminder's policies, procedures, risk assessments and children's development records. n The inspector discussed the childminder's procedures to safeguard children, and her process for reflecting on her practice, including evidence of the suitability of adults living on the premises. n The inspector took into account the comments and suggestions of parents and children.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. Since the last inspection, the childminder has attended extra training to further strengthen her knowledge and skills. For example, she has developed a good understanding of child protection issues. She is also clear about the recording and reporting procedures to protect children in her care. The childminder checks the progress of each child and seeks advice and support from outside professionals to help children do well. She works well with other providers to help ensure good continuity and progression to children's learning. The childminder takes into account the comments and suggestions of parents, children and others. This enables her to monitor the quality of her service effectively and to make continuous improvement to her practice.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder gathers relevant information from parents to establish their children's starting points in learning. She uses such information with her ongoing observations to provide activities that enthuse children to learn. The childminder plays sensitively with the children and follows their interest. Children display positive attitudes to learning and relate well to each other. They use their imagination well. For example, they love to explore how a 'buzz wire' toy can make different sounds when operated by battery. Children use different-coloured paints and create imaginative pictures. They are proud to show their work to the childminder, who praises them for their good efforts. Children like books and puppets and recognise colours.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder is a calm and patient role model. She explains to children what is acceptable behaviour and supports their social and emotional skills to good effect. She also shares her behaviour procedures with parents and children so that they are clear about her expectations. Children learn to share toys fairly, take turns and be kind to others. Their behaviour is generally good. The childminder helps children adopt healthy living. For example, children enjoy eating healthy snacks and know that drinking water keeps them hydrated. The childminder takes children to the local park and places of interest in the locality. This helps children to learn about different people and their communities. On outings, children practise crossing roads safely.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children achieve well and any gaps in learning are closing. Young children learn to socialise with others. Children listen carefully and respond well to instructions. They keenly investigate resources, including technology tools. Older children can count objects and learn about simple shapes, size and position. Children have access to writing resources to support their early writing skills.
