This provision is good

 The quality of teaching is strong and outcomes for children are good. The childminder provides a range of interesting and exciting activities for children and checks their learning through observations and assessments of their play. This helps her understand how well they are progressing.  The childminder builds children's self-esteem and encourages their confidence in many different situations. Children are learning social skills, such as good manners, and are well behaved.  The childminder manages her provision well and offers a good service to children and their families. She keeps all required documentation and records, and implements policies and procedures, which help her to safeguard children's welfare and meet their needs well.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Children do not have many experiences to gain awareness of science and technology to extend their understanding of the world and how things work.  Children do not always have the best opportunities to build their understanding of mathematical concepts, such as positional language, size and space, to extend their learning experiences.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 create more opportunities for children to explore science and technology to deepen their understanding of how things work  strengthen children's understanding of mathematical concepts to help them talk about position, size, shape and colour.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed children's play and learning during the inspection.  The inspector sampled a range of documentation, including developmental records, key policies and procedures, training certificates and the childminder's self-evaluation.  The inspector conducted a joint observation with the childminder and discussed findings.  The inspector took account of parents' views through comments in children's records and in emails.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder is rigorous in her self-evaluation. Her processes for assessing children are strong and enable her to effectively plan for children's ongoing progress. The childminder builds effective relationships with parents and others who support children's learning or who influence the quality of her service. She values their opinions and exchanges information which assists her in developing teaching skills and improving her provision. The childminder reads and attends courses which aid her in keeping up to date with childcare issues. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has benefited from attending recent safeguarding training. This has heightened her alertness to issues which impact on children's feelings of safety and well-being. She makes sure that adults who come into contact with children are supervised and, where appropriate, complete suitability checks.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder supports and extends children's learning well. She creates an environment where children feel comfortable to help themselves to resources. She understands each child well and supports them in their choices, extending their learning through play. The childminder successfully uses activities, such as playing with an exercise ball, to encourage cooperation and movement in a variety of ways. This increases children's muscle strength and coordination. She successfully encourages children to play games to support their communication and language skills, and to practice turn taking. For example, children enjoy building a farm and playing board games, such as snakes and ladders.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder uses her resources and the environment well. She ensures children are comfortable and feel welcomed. She establishes secure relationships with children and this helps them feel special. Respect and tolerance of others are promoted in many different ways, helping children build friendships. The childminder helps children understand how to keep themselves safe while playing. For example, she supports them as they learn to wait for the roundabout to stop before jumping off. The childminder caters for children's welfare needs well and supports their good health. She makes arrangements for daytime naps, encourages healthy eating, promotes personal hygiene and makes learning active. There are plenty of opportunities for children to learn the skills to take care of their needs.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are emotionally strong and show keen learning skills. This helps them successfully make progress which is at least typical for their age. The skills they learn support their readiness for school.
