p.1

This is a provision that requires improvement

n The childminder does not implement her medication policy fully. She does not always obtain parent's written consent, as required, to administer medication to children, which is also a breach of the Childcare Register. Although she talks to parents about the medication, she does not have robust processes in place to ensure she gains and shares all necessary information routinely. n The childminder does not focus on the learning needs of the older and more able children as well as she could and is sometimes too quick to step in and solve problems for them. n The childminder does not form strong links with all other settings that children attend to exchange detailed information about children's experiences elsewhere and enable greater consistency in their learning. n Self-evaluation is not robust enough to identify breaches and weaknesses in practice to target the childminder's areas for development precisely and promptly.

p.1

It has the following strengths

n The childminder establishes very warm, affectionate and playful relationships with the children. Children feel secure in the childminder's company and arrive enthusiastically and ready to play and learn. n The childminder models language and social skills particularly well. She shows genuine interest in children's comments and gives children plenty of time to think about and respond to her questions. Children confidently and eagerly initiate discussions with the childminder and each other to share their experiences. All children make good progress in their learning across all areas.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and Childcare Register the provider must: Due date implement the medication procedure consistently by gaining parent's prior written permission to administer every course of medication to children. 03/05/2019

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

n make best use of all opportunities, including planned activities, to challenge and extend the learning of the older and more able children further and support them to think critically and solve problems independently n strengthen relationships with other settings that children attend, to promote greater consistency in children's learning n develop self-evaluation to identify and target all breaches and weaknesses, to enhance practice and outcomes for children.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Inspection activities n The inspector observed children's interactions with each other and the childminder and their level of engagement in activities and routine tasks. n The inspector carried out a joint observation with the childminder to evaluate the quality of teaching and learning during a planned activity. n The inspector spoke with children during the inspection and took account of parents' written feedback. n The inspector held discussions with the childminder about her practice and procedures. n The inspector sampled a range of documents, including health and safety records, training and qualification certificates and policies and procedures.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder does not obtain parent's written permission to administer medication, as required, to ensure consistency in children's care. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a clear understanding of signs that a child's welfare might be at risk of harm and knows how to refer concerns appropriately. Partnerships with other settings that children attend are not fully effective. Although the childminder has some links with other settings, she does not exchange detailed information with them to enable them all to work together closely to provide complementary experiences for children. The childminder does not identify and target breaches of requirements and weaknesses in practice effectively, to provide the best possible care and education for children. Nonetheless, she completes additional training to support her general professional development. For example, she has developed the range and type of resources she

provides for babies, to enable them to explore and investigate using their senses.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder assesses children's learning accurately and plans enjoyable and appropriate activities to engage them in a good range of experiences. Children demonstrate good mathematical skills. The childminder prompts children to try to identify the two-dimensional shapes they can see and supports them to count. Children concentrate very well on their chosen activities, such as when focusing intently on colouring for a sustained time. The childminder gives children her full attention and responds to their comments enthusiastically, which builds their confidence to be creative in their story telling. For instance, they explain that if you blow on the green end of a toy banana, fire will come out of the other end. The childminder shares information with parents about children's achievements and progress, to support them to extend children's learning further at home.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

The childminder does not implement robust processes to promote children's health and safety as well as she could, with regard to administering medication. Children are confident and independent. For example, when the childminder fetches scissors, they eagerly request that they 'have a go' at using them without help. The childminder is respectful and a positive role model, which helps children learn good social skills. For instance, they are polite and show patience as they wait for their turn to wash their hands. Children follow the rules and consider other people's needs, such as counting slowly during games of hide and seek to give others time to hide.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children gain the key skills needed for later learning, including school. The older children show good control and coordination when they hold pencils and make careful marks, such as when writing their name. Children are imaginative and play together harmoniously. They choose roles to play during imaginative games and follow each other's cues and storylines cooperatively. For example, children become 'vets' and peer through transparent water bottles at 'poorly' toy animals, claiming the tool is an 'eye checker'.
