This provision is good

 Children settle well and are very happy in the childminder's care. They enjoy their activities and the childminder provides a warm welcome, promoting secure relationships.  The childminder interacts positively with the children and successfully promotes their learning and development. Children make good progress from their starting points.  Clear observation, assessment and planning procedures enable the childminder to monitor children's development effectively to help close gaps in their learning promptly.  The childminder takes positive action to develop her practice and provision for children. She updates her childcare knowledge and awareness through relevant training.  The childminder uses her resources well to develop children's interest, concentration and confidence. These important skills support children's learning and effectively prepare them for school.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always extend the range of sensory play for younger children.  The childminder has frequent discussions with parents about their children's individual needs; however, she is not consistently successful in engaging them all to better support their children's learning at home.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 extend the variety of sensory play opportunities for younger children to explore  involve all parents more in how they can further support their children's learning at home.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder and children in their play activities and at mealtimes.  The inspector held discussions with the childminder and parents.  The inspector sampled children's development records.  The inspector checked safety of the premises.  The inspector looked at required documentation, including qualification and insurance certificates.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder's qualification and previous nursery work provide her with good skills and knowledge to meet children's needs well. Children benefit from her secure knowledge of child development and effective support. Since registration, the childminder has had a playroom built in the garden, which provides additional play space with improved access to the garden. The childminder uses ideas gained from training well to improve and extend learning opportunities. For example, she has successfully increased the outdoor activities to promote boys' interests further. The childminder monitors her practice well. She has revised her assessment procedures and taken effective steps to share development information with others to improve children's continuity in care and learning. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a clear knowledge and information about the procedures to safeguard children's welfare.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder uses her resources and planning well to reflect children's interests and promote learning; for example, they favour toy vehicles, such as tractors, trailers and trains. Children play imaginatively with the toys and the childminder engages them in animated conversations. The childminder ensures the farm environment provides exciting learning opportunities for the children. For instance, children show great interest in seeing and feeding new lambs. The childminder teaches children about numbers as she encourages them to count and work things out. Her effective teaching skills support children's communication and language development well. Children love stories and readily sit with the childminder to listen attentively.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children feel very secure with the warm and caring childminder. They learn to be kind and to understand the different needs of others. For example, the childminder encourages older children to play gently near the younger ones. The childminder teaches children about safety, such as to hold hands on outings and to 'stop, look and listen' for cars. The childminder offers lots of praise and encouragement to help children try different things. Children benefit from physical exercise and outdoor play each day. Babies are inquisitive and eager to crawl around and find out what the older children learn. Children follow effective routines and gain very good independence skills.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are inquisitive and eager to join in. They cooperate well and develop good social skills. Children securely gain the skills ready for future learning and moving on to school.
