Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision is inadequate

n The childminder does not know the correct procedure to follow if an allegation is made against her or a member of her family. This places children at a risk of harm. n The childminder has not fully risk assessed her premises to make sure they are suitable to care for children. For example, work completed on areas within the house impacts upon the space available for children to play. n The childminder does not actively promote children's health and well-being. She has not identified that areas used to care for children are not hygienic. n The childminder does not complete the required assessment of children's development between the ages of two and three years. n The childminder does not use the information she gathers from observations and assessments to target gaps in children's learning. As a result, children do not make the best possible progress.

p.1

It has the following strengths

n Children are well behaved and are familiar with the routines of the setting. For example, they know to take their coats off and hang them on a peg.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

What the setting needs to do to improve further

use the information gathered from observations and assessments to identify any gaps in learning and plan activities to help children make the best progress. 19/04/2019

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Inspection activities n The inspector accompanied the childminder when she collected children from school. n The inspector held discussions with the childminder and observed her when caring for children. n The inspector viewed all areas used to care for children. n The inspector looked at a range of relevant documentation, including evidence of the suitability of household members, children's learning and development records and the safeguarding policy and procedure. n The inspector spoke to parents and took account of their views.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is inadequate

Safeguarding is not effective. The childminder has recently attended a safeguarding course. However, this has been ineffective as she has not gained the required knowledge to support her should she have an allegation made against herself or a member of her household. This means that children in her care are not adequately protected from harm. The childminder does not assess the quality of the environment in which children are cared for. As a result, children are exposed to unnecessary risk. The childminder supervises children effectively at all times.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder does complete regular observations of children and knows what they can do. Although she understands how to use this information to check how children are developing, she does not complete assessments frequently enough. This means any gaps in children's learning are not identified and addressed quickly enough. The childminder does not fully understand the learning and development requirements. She has not reviewed children's progress as required between age two and three years. Consequently, parents are not fully informed of their child's achievements or where they may need to access assistance for their child's development. However, the childminder has a good relationship with parents. She regularly obtains information from them about their child's learning so that she can deliver activities suited to children's interests.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are inadequate

The childminder does not complete rigorous or frequent checks of the hygiene of her premises. This means that children are exposed to unclean surfaces, floors and toilets. This does not promote children's health and well-being appropriately. Furthermore, the childminder has not made sure there is sufficient space for the children to play and learn. She has not removed additional seating in the lounge used during her leisure time before starting to work. As a result, the environment in which children have to play in is cramped and awkward. However, the childminder has strong attachments with the children she cares for. Children are secure and confident and know how to seek reassurance from her if they are feeling unsettled or tired.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Although the childminder knows the children well, she does not target areas for their development well enough so that they catch up quickly. As a result, not all children make progress typical for their age. However, children demonstrate some of the skills necessary for the next stage in their development. For example, young children can confidently hold felt-tip pens and use them to draw lines on paper.
