Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This is a provision that requires improvement

n The childminder fails to keep accurate records of the dates and times that children are in her care. This is a breach of the Early Years Register and Childcare Register requirements. n The childminder does not fully understand the early years requirements for assessing children. Therefore, she has not completed the required progress check for children between the ages of two and three years old. n Although the childminder plans what individual children should do next, her planning is not thorough and does not swiftly close gaps in their development. For example, she misses some opportunities to improve children's self-care skills and early writing skills. n The childminder does not promptly address the areas for improvement identified, in order to strengthen the overall quality of her practice and to meet all of the statutory requirements.

p.1

It has the following strengths

n The childminder develops close relationships with parents. She shares information regularly to keep them informed about children's daily care and learning. n Children settle quickly and easily within the childminder's care. They develop close bonds and attachments with her and they know when to seek her support. n The childminder completes regular risk assessments to ensure her home is safe and suitable for children. n The childminder interacts with children during their play to support their communication and language development. For example, she asks simple questions and gives children sufficient time to respond.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Inspection activities n The inspector sampled a range of documentation, including the childminder's training certificates, insurance policy, records of attendance and safeguarding policy. n The inspector held discussions with the childminder about her daily teaching and care practices. n The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder and observed the quality of care and teaching. n The inspector looked at the areas of the home used for childminding purposes.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management requires improvement

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder attends safeguarding and paediatric first-aid training. She has knowledge of child protection issues and the procedures to report any concerns to the relevant authorities. The childminder does not keep a record of children's daily hours of attendance. Nonetheless, she is clear about which children are present. Therefore, their safety and well-being have not been put at significant risk. The childminder is clear about what she needs to do to improve the provision. However, she does not take prompt action to address the issues. The childminder promotes equality and supports children's understanding of different people and families.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder does not complete the required progress check for children between the ages of two and three years old. However, she does check children's progress, but does not plan as precisely as possible to build further on what children already know and can do. For example, she does not support older children to fully develop their early writing skills. Despite this, children are active and they are clear about their own interests. They learn to focus and concentrate during their favourite activities. For example, children spend a long time fitting together the train pieces and pretending to drive around the room. The childminder gives simple instructions to develop children's understanding and she uses accurate pronunciation to help improve their speech. Children begin to develop their mathematical skills. For instance, they learn to count and to recognise some shapes.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

The childminder does not support children well enough to improve their self-care skills. For example, older children do not show awareness of the need to use the toilet and they still drink from a baby's bottle. Children appear happy in the childminder's care. They display a strong sense of belonging at her home and they independently choose resources that are accessible to them. The childminder supports children to develop their social skills. For example, she arranges regular visits to the local playgroup for children to meet with other children, to form friendships and begin to share resources. The childminder ensures that children have access to rigorous activities to strengthen their small and large muscles. She provides healthy food for children to eat and drinking water to keep hydrated.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Overall, children make steady progress. However, they do not show development in some aspects of their self-care skills and early writing skills. Despite this, children are confident and they learn how to handle different resources. Children develop their balance, coordination and mobility. They express themselves during their play and request what they want to do next. Children listen and show respect to the childminder.
