The provision is good
n The childminder observes children as they play and provides a range of activities that follows children's preferences. n Children feel comfortable and enjoy their time in the setting. They settle quickly and build positive relationships with the childminder and his co-childminder. n Children follow good hygiene routines and tend to their own personal needs successfully. For instance, they are encouraged to wash their hands before eating snacks, which they do independently. n The childminder is organised and implements effective procedures to help promote children's welfare. He ensures that the premises are secure and conducts regular risk assessments, to help minimise hazards in the play environment. n The childminder is a good role model. He is calm, kind and teaches children good manners. He regularly praises children, which helps to promote their emotional well- being.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
n On occasion, the childminder does not give children time to think through their own ideas and interrupts their thought processes as they play. n The childminder does not target professional development opportunities precisely enough to help raise the quality of his practice to an even higher level.

p.2
Effectiveness of leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a clear understanding of his responsibility to protect children and knows how to refer concerns to the appropriate authorities. He attends mandatory training, such as paediatric first-aid training, and is confident in how to deal with incidents that may arise. The childminder regularly reflects on the provision, to help identify both the strengths and aspects of the setting to develop further. This is helping him to continue improving outcomes for children. The childminder has a kind and caring approach and understands the children in his care well. He works in partnership with parents to establish children's abilities when they start and plans experiences to build on these further. He shares children's achievements with parents daily, to help ensure continuity in their children's care and well-being.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The children benefit from activities that build on their learning at school. For example, as children play, the childminder introduces a range of concepts, such as discussing shapes and number. This helps children to learn to use mathematics as part of their everyday lives. Children show good levels of engagement and enthusiasm and have strong organisational skills that they demonstrate as they play. For example, children prepare a picnic. They show good imagination, pretending they are serving to the childminder and visitors. The childminder uses opportunities such as these to encourage children to think about healthy food options, which helps to build on their health and well-being. Children demonstrate a high level of maturity. For example, they play games that require a good level of patience. They proudly share words in their home languages, which fosters their sense of identity.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children are self-assured and talk freely and enthusiastically to the childminder and visitors about their day at school. They listen to the childminder and follow routines well. For example, they help to tidy up toys before eating meals. Children's behaviour is good. They enjoy taking part in activities and learn to take turns and share. Children develop a good understanding of their local community. They visit the library and take regular trips to the river to feed the ducks and to watch the boats go by. The childminder successfully supports children's physical skills, for example, during trips to local parks and play areas. He ensures that children learn about their own safety, such as how to cross roads safely.
