p.1

The provision is good

n The childminder has worked very hard to raise her provision to a good standard. She regularly evaluates her practice and takes effective steps to improve what she does. For example, she carries out daily risk assessments to ensure her premises are safe for the care of children. n Teaching is effective. The childminder engages all children fully and she plans effectively to promote their development, including the language skills of babies. n The childminder carries out regular observations while children play and she makes accurate assessments of their achievements. She knows what children need to move on to the next steps in their learning. She provides daily feedback to parents about their child's experiences, and they agree jointly how to support children's further learning. n The childminder obtains information from parents about their child when they first start in her setting. She carries out initial observations during the settling-in phase. She

makes good use of this information to provide preferred resources and activities until children settle fully. n Children are happy in the childminder's care. Older children sing spontaneously while they play and younger children move around freely exploring their surroundings. They press buttons on toys and prod them so that they hear sounds and listen to these until they are ready to move on to other play activities.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

n On occasions, the childminder takes the full lead and gives directions so that children do not have enough opportunities to express their imaginative ideas while they learn. n Although the childminder shares information about children's development when they start to attend other settings, she does not maintain consistent communication subsequently, to complement their learning at nursery.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

n provide more opportunities for children to fully express their imaginative ideas while they learn n extend communication to complement children's learning at other settings where they also attend.

Inspection activities n The inspector had a tour of the premises and discussed risk assessments with the childminder. n The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoor and assessed the impact this had on children's learning. n The inspector held discussions with the childminder, including the evaluation of activities and review of her self-evaluation. n The inspector spoke with the children and looked at a sample of documents used for the daily running of the setting. n The inspector spoke with parents and also read written feedback from other parents and took account of their views.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of the signs of possible abuse and neglect. She knows what to do if there were any allegations against herself, or if she should have concerns about a child in her care. Self-evaluation is ongoing, and the childminder has addressed the actions raised at the last inspection successfully. As a result, she takes effective steps to minimise or remove any potential hazards to children in the environment. The childminder consistently seeks opportunities to increase her knowledge. For example, she researches online information regularly and has extended her understanding of how to monitor children's vocabulary. She now includes effective strategies so that the communication skills of younger children in particular, are developing well. The childminder works closely with parents and they say they trust and value her support. Parents provide glowing feedback about the care the

childminder provides and the good progress their children make in their learning.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder provides stimulating learning opportunities. She encourages children to join in well with interactive stories. They take delight in wiggling the legs of a toy spider and brushing the hair of puppets. The childminder makes sensory learning enjoyable. For example, she tickles children with the hairy parts of the resources and they giggle in response. The childminder includes good challenge for older children to retell stories. The childminder skilfully extends the language skills of younger children to increase their understanding of words. She introduces words, such as 'squishy' and demonstrates how to squeeze the dough. This helps them to make meaningful connections to their actions. The childminder plans effectively for each child's learning based on her monitoring and observations. Older children learn about measurements, cutting long sausages made of play dough into smaller pieces. Younger children learn to manipulate the dough using

various resources and their fingers, developing their coordination skills. The childminder gives lots of praise and motivates children, ensuring they remain focused.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children behave well and form strong bonds with the childminder. Older children sit close by while they look at books and younger children sit on her lap to explore textures as they enjoy story time. Children develop good independence skills. Older children use the bathroom with minimal assistance and younger children use good control to feed themselves with cutlery. Children have many opportunities to visit physical play venues with the childminder. Younger children in particular, have developed confidence to walk upstairs holding the childminder's hand. Children are self-assured and interact confidently with the childminder.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress from their starting points and are within typical levels of development for their ages. They develop essential skills for the next stage in learning with the childminder in preparation for school. Children enjoy making marks and count while they play. They have opportunities to visit the local library and this supports their language and early literacy skills.
