Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: outstanding
This is a home where young people feel loved, cherished and cared for. The exceptional staff build trusting relationships with young people from the very start, and these continue long after they have moved out. Young people are respected and valued and are encouraged to achieve their personal bests.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: outstanding
The young person in this home receives highly personalised care and help. Staff are well trained. They use specific and current research to inform their practice. The team members make it their business to know everything that they can about their young person to help him in the best way possible. Consequently, the quality of care they provide is excellent.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: outstanding
The manager and staff are extremely proud of the young person’s achievements. In the face of many personal challenges, he has made significant progress in his emotional well-being, self-advocacy, positive relationships and identity. The young person goes to school, has extra tuition and is predicted to pass GCSEs at a good level. He takes part in a wide range of activities most evenings. Friends regularly visit the home and sometimes stay overnight.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: outstanding
The manager and staff go over and above to support their young person, although the staff do not see this as anything other than as it should be. For example, when the young person took part in a dance show one evening, not just one member of staff attended but nearly the whole team. When the young person was admitted to hospital, staff were there for him round the clock and did not leave his side. The young person commented: ‘They really help me. They talk to me. They make things a lot easier for me. I trust every one of them. I can’t think of anything they could do better.’
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: outstanding
The manager and staff embrace and include the young person’s family positively, which benefits the young person significantly. Parents said: ‘They have been amazing… They keep us updated and go above and beyond.’
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: outstanding
Communication and working relationships with other professionals are excellent and effective. Professionals consistently praise the staff and the difference they have made to the young person’s life. They describe the team as responding to issues very quickly and thoroughly so that ‘nothing is left to chance’.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: outstanding
The atmosphere of the home is inclusive, friendly and warm. The young person asks the staff to wear slippers in the home so it feels homely, and staff have embraced this. The staff help the young person to have much to look forward to, such as holidays, party planning and fun times, as well as providing care, support and teaching. Inspection report children’s home: SC471038 4
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: outstanding
Staff work with a high level of risk and complexity and are trained to understand how to safely assess and manage this risk. Their approach is positive, competent and solution focused. The manager and staff communicate closely with professionals from different disciplines and use research-based strategies. This means that when the young person puts himself at risk, staff respond consistently and robustly to keep him safe. The manager and staff also receive independent, clinical supervision.
p.4
How well children and young people are helped and protected: outstanding
Staff have helped the young person to use communication cards, to demonstrate his feelings and views. This keeps him safer and he is now able to tell people when he self- harms. Staff have helped the young person to use these resources in school as well as in the home.
p.4
How well children and young people are helped and protected: outstanding
On the two occasions when the young person went missing, staff were relentless in searching, following and supporting him, and so he faced less danger. The manager ensured that the young person was offered a meeting with an independent person when he returned home as well as time with his staff. The manager did not receive information promptly from this independent interview, which assists in clarifying why the young person went missing. However, she has chased this up and subsequently received it.
p.4
How well children and young people are helped and protected: outstanding
Any incidents of concern are well recorded, analysed and reviewed. The social worker and other relevant people receive this information quickly, so that the most appropriate action can be taken.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: outstanding
The registered manager is an exceptional leader and is delighted and proud of the young person and the staff team. This positive approach is infectious across the home. The manager has high expectations of the young person and staff, and clear plans are in place for these to be achieved. Boundaries are clear but flexible, and the young person responds to this approach.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: outstanding
A strong culture of tolerance, equality and diversity permeates this team. Staff have received specialist training and have, with the help of the young person, designed an extremely interesting and informative workshop about gender and identity. This workshop is being rolled out to other young people and staff, which increases the young person’s self-esteem and confidence, while making a positive difference to other people’s lives.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: outstanding
Management systems are highly effective, and the manager knows the strengths and weaknesses of the home. She understands what needs to happen to help the young person have the best possible experiences and reach his potential. The manager regularly gets feedback from the young person, family and professionals to constantly improve the home. Inspection report children’s home: SC471038 5 The manager is a strong advocate for the young person and makes sure that he gets the services he needs. At times, this has involved successfully escalating issues to senior staff in other organisations.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: outstanding
