p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

n The childminder does not always use her assessments to identify precisely what children need to learn next to help them to make more rapid progress. n The childminder does not always gather enough information from parents about children's learning and development when they first start attending to help promote their learning to the highest level.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

The childminder is keen to strengthen her own learning. She undertakes research in her own time to strengthen her knowledge and skills. She evaluates her provision and identifies areas that she could improve further. For example, she is currently strengthening her knowledge of how she can identify and respond to younger children's emerging interests. She also works well with other registered childminders to keep her knowledge and skills up to date. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a good knowledge of the signs and symptoms that may indicate possible abuse to children. She knows who to contact should she have any concerns about a child's welfare. The childminder monitors children's learning. Overall, She maintains a good overview of children's learning.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Children enjoy their learning. The childminder plans activities to engage children. For example, young children enjoy transferring pompoms from one container to another. They concentrate well as they try to pick them up with pegs. They persevere as they encounter difficulties. The childminder helps children to learn new skills effectively. The childminder promotes children's literacy skills. Children enjoy looking at books and begin to handle them and talk about the pictures they see. This is demonstrated when children keep returning to their favourite book and turning the pages to find their favourite picture to talk about.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children develop a very good relationship with the childminder. For example, they climb onto the childminder's knee for cuddles and follow her wherever she goes. Parents comment that they can relax knowing children are well cared for. The childminder knows children well, she quickly recognises when they are tired and need to relax. Children develop an understanding of how they can keep themselves healthy. They enjoy a range of healthy snacks. Young children know that they must wash their hands before eating. They enjoy fresh air as they go for walks or play in the local parks.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress in their learning. They learn a good range of skills, which prepare them well for the next stage in their learning. Children learn to count with numbers in order. They also begin to recognise some numbers in the environment. Younger children enjoy music and rhymes and eagerly dance to the music, swinging their hips and arms. They learn how to operate toys and equipment. For example, they press the button on a music box repeatedly, so they can respond to the music. They enjoy joining in with the repeated refrains of everyday songs and rhymes.
