The provision is good

n The well-qualified childminder makes good use of professional development activities to strengthen her teaching and improve outcomes for children. For instance, she has introduced even more natural resources to support very young children to engage in sensory exploration. n The childminder monitors children's progress well to identify areas where they most need support. She plans challenging activities to build on children's existing skills and knowledge successfully. Children make good progress towards the early learning goals. n The childminder helps children to settle in quickly and forms strong, trusting relationships with them. Children are self-assured and confidently explore the well- resourced environment, making decisions about their play. n Children have a positive approach to learning and demonstrate a strong willingness to try new things. They have good listening and concentration skills and become absorbed

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

n Occasionally, the childminder misses opportunities to extend children's imaginative skills even further as they engage in self-chosen activities. n The childminder has not fully developed her questioning techniques to provide the very best opportunities for children to think critically.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Inspection activities n The inspector had a tour of the setting. n The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors and assessed the impact on children's learning. n The inspector completed a joint observation with the childminder. n The inspector held discussions with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation, such as accident records, policies, children's development records and evidence of the suitability of household members. n The inspector talked to the children and considered parents feedback.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

The childminder monitors and evaluates the quality of her provision well. She considers the views of parents and children to help her to make relevant ongoing improvements. For instance, the childminder has introduced even more effective systems to communicate with parents and help them to share in their child's experiences. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder maintains a safe, secure, and hygienic environment. She has a good understanding of child protection matters and knows what to do if she has any concerns about children's welfare. Very effective information sharing practices with other settings that children attend ensure that continuity in children's learning and care is promoted well.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder knows children very well. She uses careful observations to identify children's current stage of development and plan for their ongoing learning. Children thoroughly enjoy exploring paint and find out what happens when colours mix. They demonstrate good physical skills as they use an array of tools to scoop, pour and make marks. The childminder interacts enthusiastically to make activities enjoyable. She reads stories using interesting tones and voices and encourages children to recite key words and phrases. Children learn about the natural world as they plant bulbs and talk about how they grow. The childminder introduces mathematical language and helps children to count in sequence. She makes the most of her strong partnerships with parents to involve them in all aspects of children's learning and care. For instance, she discusses children's next steps with parents and provides them with ideas about how they can

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder is a positive role model. She provides clear explanations to help children to understand why rules exist and supports them to share resources fairly. Children know what the childminder expects of them and their behaviour is good. Healthy lifestyles are promoted well. Children are energetic and enjoy unrestricted access to outdoors. They intuitively wash their hands before eating nutritious snacks and meals.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children have a good repertoire of songs and sing spontaneously as they play. They are independent and gain good self-care skills. For example, children confidently put on their own shoes before going outdoors. Children count beyond 10 and show an interest in numerals in the environment. They are beginning to link sounds to letters and attempt to write their name. These are just some of the many skills children gain in readiness for nursery and school.
