p.1

The provision is good

n The childminder is particularly focused on supporting children's physical development skills. She provides many opportunities for children to balance, climb and exert themselves. n The childminder provides a wealth of resources and toys that stimulates children's interest and attention. Children are able to follow their own ideas freely. For instance, they work out which prop would be most appropriate for their role play. n The childminder helps promote younger children's independence and self-care skills well. She gently and persistently helps children persevere with tasks they find tricky, such as putting on their own shoes. n Parents are extremely positive about the care the childminder provides for their children. She shares information in a variety of ways that helps support continuity in children's care and learning. n All children make good progress, relative to their starting points.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

n At times the childminder does not capture learning opportunities to present even more challenge for the older or the most able children. n The childminder's evaluations of her provision and practice do not sharply focus on how she can improve her teaching even further to help children make consistently outstanding progress.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

n focus teaching more on further challenging and extending older children's learning n reflect more on the impact of teaching practice to help identify more specifically where improvements may help children reach the highest levels of achievement.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Inspection activities n The inspector observed activities and spoke to the childminder and children at appropriate times. n The inspector looked at a range of documentation and spoke to the childminder about how she evaluates the effectiveness of her provision. n The inspector observed the quality of teaching, and she and the childminder jointly evaluated the effectiveness of the childminder's interactions with children. n The inspector checked the evidence of the childminder's training.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder updates her knowledge around safeguarding children through regular training and links with other childminders. She is alert to any signs that would give rise to a child protection concern. The childminder knows the required procedures to follow in the event of any such concern. She carries out effective risk assessments that help keep children safe. For instance, children know they have to wash their hands after handling any of the pets. The childminder effectively develops some aspects of her provision based on professional development opportunities. For example, she has strengthened her policies around sharing data. The childminder uses regular and accurate assessments to check for any gaps in children's development and to plan for their future learning.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder supports children's communication and language skills well. For instance, as children play on see saws, climbing frames and swings, the childminder models words, such as 'over', 'under', 'up' and 'down'. Children learn to use these words with confidence to describe their own actions. The childminder provides children with many opportunities to create and imagine. Younger children enjoy making marks with chalks and painting the concrete floor with water. Older children enjoy many art and craft activities. The childminder helps children to gain early literacy and mathematical skills. For instance, she helps children learn to read and write their own names, count and recognise numbers.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder supervises children well and quickly responds to their physical needs. For example, she promptly changes nappies to help keep children comfortable and clean. She provides food when children show they are hungry. She builds close relationships with children and they settle well. Children welcome her into their play and they share jokes. The childminder is very respectful of children and values their communications. She takes time to listen and understand what children are trying to tell her. She teaches them to behave well and stay healthy. She provides healthy foods.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children have fun and enjoy their time in the childminder's care. They learn to listen well to each other. All children, including those who find speaking difficult, become confident communicators. Children demonstrate secure social skills. They share toys, take turns and include each other in their games. Children gain the skills that help prepare them for future learning and school.
