This provision is good
The childminder has efficient strategies to ensure safety procedures are regularly assessed and reviewed to help keep children safe indoors and outdoors. The childminder undertakes effective assessments of children's abilities and plans purposeful activities to meet their individual learning needs. Children make good progress from when they start. The childminder uses a variety of opportunities to build on children's communication and language skills. For example, young children and those learning English as an additional language are able to string two words together in meaningful ways. Older children learn to participate in conversation with adults and other children. The childminder and his co-childminder use their time well throughout the day. Their flexible approach allows children the opportunities to organise and pursue their own games or interests alongside daily routines. Children enjoy their time at the setting.
p.1
This provision is good
Children enjoy varied and nutritious meals that meet their dietary requirements and help broaden their tastes in food.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
At times, the childminder misses opportunities to make effective use of practical situations to develop children's early mathematical understanding and skills further. The childminder does not seek the views of parents when deciding what could be improved at the setting.
p.1
What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed the childminder's interaction with the children during activities. The inspector spoke to the childminder, his co-childminder and the children at appropriate times during the inspection. The inspector viewed the rooms and resources used by the children. The inspector looked at children's records, planning documentation, training certificates and a range of documentation, including policies and procedures.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a secure understanding of child protection matters, including how to proceed if a child is at risk of harm. The childminder's knowledge and understanding of childcare are enhanced through the range of training he attends and the support he receives from his co-childminder and external advisers. For example, he has received support on tracking children's progress. This has a positive impact on the quality of teaching and learning experiences for children. The childminder and parents work well together to promote consistent care for children. The childminder and his co-childminder uses self-evaluation appropriately to identify their strengths and target areas for development. For example, they plan to introduce more activities outdoors to complement the provision made indoors and to broaden children's learning experiences.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder organises the indoor space effectively. This enables children to have safe and easy access to resources so that they are able to make choices about what they want to play with and when. The childminder frequently reads stories to children making it an enjoyable experience. For example, he reads familiar stories that capture children's imaginations and uses resources to help ensure all children can understand the storyline, join in and learn to concentrate. The childminder helps children to make sense of the world in which they live. For example, children go out on visits to local shops, museums, nature reserves and farms. Children learn about the animals and the similarities and differences within the environments where they live.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder obtains relevant information from parents in order to know and meet the children's individual care needs when they first start. Children feel safe and secure in the caring and warm environment the childminder provides. The childminder uses encouraging methods to help children understand why some behaviour is not acceptable. He also helps children to learn important social skills so that they learn to cooperate with others. Children learn to stay safe as they carefully listen and respond to gentle reminders from the childminders. The childminders practise the fire drill procedures regularly with the children to help them know how to evacuate the premises quickly and safely in the event of an emergency. The childminders' good daily routines enable children to understand the need for good personal hygiene.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children progress well and develop a good foundation for their next stage in their development and in preparation for school. They begin to manage their personal needs. Young children show interest in, and learn to recognise, simple shapes. Children are learning to share and take turns during activities. They take part in regular exercise that helps develop their physical skills.
