This provision is good

 The childminder checks her home and resources regularly to help ensure they remain suitable for children to use.  The childminder invites parents to visit her with their children before they start. She visits them in their own home and accompanies parents and children on their walks to school. This helps children to become familiar with her and they settle quickly.  Children are confident and have good social skills. They are friendly, cooperative and polite. Children enjoy their time in the setting and each other's company.  The childminder is interested in what children are doing and sensitively observes their learning while they are playing. She asks them questions about their game and offers simple instructions on how to improve the skills they need to compete with their friends.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder's plans for professional development for her and her assistant are not rigorous enough to raise the quality of the provision to exceptional levels.  The childminder is not fully successful at engaging all schools children attend. This means that she is not consistently able to complement what all children are doing in school.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 strengthen the programme of professional development and enhance the quality of provision provided to children  continue to build on existing partnerships with schools to obtain information about how children can be supported further.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of practice and its impact on children.  The inspector evaluated an activity with the childminder.  The inspector spoke to children during the inspection.  The inspector looked at children's records and a range of other documentation, including training certificates and evidence of suitability checks.  The inspector took account of parents' views.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder understands the possible signs and symptoms of abuse. She is also clear about the procedures she must implement if she feels children are at risk. The childminder has suitable recruitment procedures to help check the suitability of her assistant and ensures that they understand her safeguarding procedures. Since her last inspection, the childminder has successfully adapted her practice to help ensure that she makes good use of her space and resources to meet children's individual needs. The childminder knows her setting well and involves parents in her evaluation process. Parents describe the childminder as 'reliable, trustworthy and flexible', and a 'great source of comfort at difficult times'.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder interacts well with children. She instinctively knows when to give them the space and time to explore their own ideas while they are engrossed in imaginative play. Children are good communicators and the childminder encourages this. She asks them questions about what they are doing and how their day has been at school. The childminder encourages children who are learning to read. For example, children are given time to read their book from school while she listens. The childminder provides word cards with pictures of food and drink so that children can decide what they want to eat and drink. Children enjoy craft activities that help them relax after school, such as badge making and decorating special cards.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder is well prepared for collecting children from school. She ensures that children understand the rules that help them to stay safe. The childminder teaches children how important it is be considerate and respect others. For example, without prompting they stand to one side to let adults with children in pushchairs safely pass. Children are able to help themselves to suitable resources and equipment displayed with picture and word labels to aid selection. This helps to promote children's independence well. There is an obvious respect between the children and the childminder. Children's relationships are strong, with younger children looking up to the older children who are good role models.
