Inspection date

Previous inspection date 19 April 2018 14 November 2017

p.1

Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder cares for more children aged under five years than she is allowed to.  The childminder does not always accurately identify what children know, can already do or where there are gaps in their learning. This hinders children from making good progress.  The childminder is not able to make all relevant records available for inspection.  The childminder does not effectively monitor and evaluate her teaching skills to improve the quality of teaching to a good standard.  The childminder does not consistently support children to develop their understanding of how to keep themselves safe.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 Children play in a clean environment where they learn the importance of good personal hygiene.  The childminder has positive partnerships with parents and staff at settings children attend, which help to promote continuity of care for children.  The childminder manages children's behaviour in an appropriate manner. She helps them to adhere to the boundaries set. Children learn to share toys and generally play with others.  Children have regular opportunities to practise their physical skills.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 ensure the correct adult-to-child ratios are maintained at all times 23/04/2018  use observation and assessment effectively to identify any gaps in children's development, and identify and plan for the next steps in children's individual learning 11/05/2018

p.2

Due Date

 make relevant documents, including public liability insurance and car insurance certificates, accessible and available for inspection. 23/04/2018

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 use rigorous evaluation processes and professional development to strengthen the quality of teaching, so that all children receive the challenge and support they need to make good progress  help children to understand the importance of safety so that they learn to keep themselves safe.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector had discussions with the childminder about her role and practices at appropriate times throughout the inspection.  The inspector observed children engaged in activities and the childminder interacting with them.  The inspector viewed the areas of the home used for childminding purposes, and the equipment used for children's play and safety.  The inspector sampled a range of documentation, including children's assessment reports, registration forms and some policies and procedures.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder has made some improvements since the last inspection to address the weaknesses, however, she has not gone far enough to raise the quality of teaching and learning to a good level. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has strengthened her understanding of child protection matters. She knows how to identify and respond appropriately should she suspect that a child is at risk of harm. The childminder carries out regular safety checks to minimise hazards to children. However, her register of attendance shows that on one day during the week she exceeds the maximum number of children for whom she is permitted to care. The impact is limited and no children have come to harm. The childminder generally keeps and maintains records for the safe management of children, but she is not able to locate her insurance certificates. While the childminder seeks support from professionals to help develop her knowledge of childcare, her self-

evaluation process is not sufficiently robust to address all weaknesses.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder has some awareness of children's individual development, including with what they like to play. However, her assessment of children's learning and development lacks accuracy and detail. Therefore, she is not able to accurately identify children's next steps for learning to help them reach their full potential. Nevertheless, the childminder supports children's communication and language skills. For example, she encourages children to engage in simple conversations and sometimes expands on children's attempts to communicate, to help develop their vocabulary. The childminder supports children to celebrate their own achievements by praising their efforts. This helps to build on children's self-confidence. Children enjoy stacking blocks and using play dough to make objects. However, the childminder sometimes misses opportunities to further extend children's learning and development as they play.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

Children develop close relationships with the childminder and show they are secure in her care. For instance, on their arrival they run to the childminder to greet her. Children have opportunities to socialise with other children when they visit toddler groups. The childminder joins in with children's games. The childminder appropriately stores children's lunch boxes to prevent them from spoiling. However, the childminder does not consistently support children to learn the importance of how to stay safe, particularly when they eat meals.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Children make suitable progress, in relation to their age and stage of development. For example, they develop an interest in books, get to know familiar stories and learn that books are for reading. Children learn to recognise colours and explore making marks. However, due to weaknesses in the quality of teaching and the systems for monitoring children's learning, they do not make good enough progress.
