p.1

Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder does not use assessments of children's learning to plan effectively for their learning needs. She does not provide children with challenging activities that focus on their individual next steps in learning, so that they can make best possible progress.  Self-evaluation is not used effectively enough to focus on improving the overall quality of practice, including teaching, to strengthen the outcomes for children.  The childminder misses opportunities to help children gain the skills they need to use various implements correctly, to help extend control of their small-muscle skills.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 Children form strong attachments with the childminder. They are confident and have a positive sense of belonging and behave well. The childminder teaches the children about using manners, being kind to each other, and how to share during play.  Partnership with parents is effective and helps to support continuity of children’s learning and care. The childminder uses various ways to keep parents well informed about their children's learning and how to extend this at home.  The childminder encourages children to do things for themselves to help enhance their emerging independence and personal skills.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 use assessment of children's learning effectively and improve planning to provide children with challenging activities that focus on their individual next steps in learning. 30/05/2018

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 develop the use of self-evaluation to help improve the quality of teaching and learning  make the most of opportunities to help children to learn how to use different tools to help develop and extend control of their small-muscle skills.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector carried out a tour of the childminder's home. She looked at the range of resources available for the children to use and security arrangements to keep the children safe.  The inspector spoke to the children and the childminder during the inspection. She took account of parents' views through written comments and statements.  The inspector discussed children's learning and their progress with the childminder.  The inspector observed activities indoors and the interactions between the childminder and children. She completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder and discussed the impact of teaching.  The inspector discussed with the childminder some of her policies and procedures, and checked her suitability. She also discussed the how the childminder reflects on her practice and identifies areas for improvement.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

Since the last inspection, the childminder has started to review her practice, but she does not evaluate all aspects of her provision effectively enough to help improve the quality of her teaching. Although the childminder has updated her skills in relation to safeguarding issues, there are still weaknesses in the quality of her teaching. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a secure understanding of child protection issues and the procedures to follow if she has concerns about a child in her care. She understands the wider issues relating to safeguarding children, such as radicalisation and the safe use of mobile phones in the provision. She is confident about the signs to look for that may indicate a child is at risk of harm and understands what to do if an allegation is made against her. The childminder regularly communicates with other providers to help support consistency in care and learning when children also attend a different provision.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder has begun to assess children's progress and identify some next steps in children's learning. However, her planning is not fully focused to provide children with ongoing challenges, such as how to hold tools correctly, to help children build more control of their small-muscle skills. She does not fully ensure that children are challenged enough through the activities to support their learning as much as possible. The childminder knows the children's interests well and provides activities that they delight in. For example, children thoroughly enjoy painting and sticking activities. The childminder provides a selection of media. She talks to the children about what they are doing and encourages children to pronounce words correctly, such as 'hippopotamus'.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

Inconsistencies in the quality of teaching mean that children are not challenged or inspired to learn as much as they can. Despite this, the childminder is attentive to the children's needs and supervises them effectively to ensure their safety. Children are happy and settled, and demonstrate they are comfortable in their surroundings. They help to care for the environment cooperatively, for instance, when they tidy away the toys. The childminder promotes a healthy lifestyle. Children receive healthy meals and snacks, and have opportunities to play outside and exercise daily. They learn about the wider world when they visit places of interest and mix with other children.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Although, children enjoy their time with the childminder, they do not make the best possible progress in their learning. They develop some skills for their future learning and school. Children demonstrate strong independence and attend to their own personal needs effectively. They have a keen interest in books and listen to stories well.
