This provision is good

 The childminder has an excellent understanding of children's interests and how they like to play. Through her very close working partnership with school she provides an exceptional range of imaginative and engaging experiences for children that supports their learning and development.  The childminder offers a caring and nurturing environment for children. Settling-in visits help her to settle children quickly. Children demonstrate that they feel secure and confident in her care.  The childminder is very effective at helping children to develop their understanding of the world as she encourages them to notice and chat about what they see in their environment. Children eagerly gather items to look at under the magnifying glass once they get back to her house.  The childminder regularly reflects on her practice. She provides parents with questionnaires to gather their feedback to improve the care and learning she provides.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder sometimes does not provide enough opportunities to help children to understand the many ways that things grow over time.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder.  The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of persons living in the household.  The inspector had a tour of the premises and spoke to children during the inspection.  The inspector took account of the views of parents through written feedback provided.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good knowledge and understanding of the policies and procedures to follow and is aware of her responsibilities to protect children. She knows what to do if she has concerns about the welfare of a child in her care. The childminder completes daily risk assessments to help her to identify and effectively manage any potential risks in her home and on any outings she takes children on. The childminder keeps parents well informed about their children's time in her setting.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is outstanding

The childminder is well qualified and experienced. She uses her excellent observations of children's play and interests to help her to plan activities that enthuse and motivate children to learn. Through the very close partnership with school she focuses on what children need to learn next. For example, she provides a notebook for children to practise writing between the lines. This encourages and engages children really well in their imaginative play to pretend they are writing a menu for a café and to think about how they form the letters. The childminder is excellent at asking children thought-provoking questions and encourages them to investigate and explore. For example, children are excited when they recognise letters in the local environment when they are out on walks. They point out shapes that they link to letters, such as 'n' and 'u' when they see a broken window frame. The childminder makes the most of this interest when they return to her

home as she involves children in forming letters using materials such as pipe cleaners and sticks.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder is devoted to the children she looks after and forms very close relationships with them. From an early age she helps them to socialise with other children, such as visiting playgroups to help them to learn how to take account of other children's needs. Children are well behaved and show a good understanding of the boundaries that the childminder sets in her home. Children benefit from regular outings and particularly gain an understanding of the natural world on visits to places such as forest school. Children become very confident and learn how to manage their own safety well. For instance, they learn how to choose the best place to cross the road and when it is safe to do so. The childminder helps children to develop healthy lifestyles. For example, she encourages them to understand about the benefits of healthy eating.
