This provision is good

 The childminder provides a good quality service for all children and their families. She involves them in evaluating her provision to help her identify areas for improvements. For example, she is currently improving the outdoor area for children's learning.  Children's behaviour is good and is managed in a positive way. The childminder is attentive, offers praise and explanations, and is a good role model for children.  The quality of teaching is high and children make good progress in their development. Children are confident to share their opinions and make independent choices in their learning.  The childminder has established good and trusting partnerships with parents and other professionals. She shares detailed and accurate records about the progress children make to promote continuity for children's learning at home and when they move on to other settings.  Parents report that they are extremely happy and confident with the care the

childminder provides. They say that she works hard to meet their children's needs.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder occasionally misses opportunities to strengthen children's interests in written letters, words and numbers to further promote their literacy and mathematical development.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 make full use of all opportunities to extend children's understanding of written letters, words and numbers to promote further their developing literacy and mathematics.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed activities indoors.  The inspector carried out a joint observation and had discussions with the childminder.  The inspector looked at children's records, evidence of suitability and a range of other documentation, including safeguarding procedures.  The inspector received written parental feedback and considered their views.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of her duty to protect children. The childminder is committed to improving her practice through attending training. For example, she has attended recent training on safeguarding and this has enhanced her awareness and practice of how to keep children safe from harm. She knows what to do if she is concerned about a child's safety. The childminder maintains positive partnerships with parents and other professionals. For example, she regularly shares children's learning, progress and achievements with them to promote continuity in children's development. The childminder assesses and monitors children's progress regularly. Overall, she offers them good challenge to help them move on to the next steps in their learning, particularly those who are exceeding typical levels of development.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder has high expectations of all children and, overall, provides challenging experiences for them. For example, she explains the purpose of activities, asks appropriately challenging questions and enables children to solve problems for themselves. Children receive good support and attention so they enjoy their learning and develop their confidence. The childminder knows children's learning needs and plans well for these. For example, during the inspection they discussed the musical instruments she had collected from around the world and children counted how many there were. This provided children with good opportunities to develop their knowledge and understanding of the world, and their mathematical, communication and language skills. Children enjoy listening to stories the childminder reads to them as part of their early literacy development. Children have opportunities to hear stories from different cultures where

they learn about the wider world and develop their understanding of different communities.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder provides a welcoming environment for children and their families. This enhances their sense of belonging. Children's self-esteem is high. The childminder builds warm and caring relationships with children and provides a safe environment in which they are settled to promote their emotional well-being. Parents say that their children are happy and comfortable in the childminder's care. Children have good opportunities to develop respect for others. They learn about the differing needs of people within their community. For example, during a construction and small world activity the childminder skilfully explained why one of the characters was in a wheelchair.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress in all areas of learning. They are happy, confident and are well prepared for their future learning.
