p.1

Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder does not have a thorough understanding of how to effectively track what children know and can do and use this to inform her planning. Activities and play experiences are not consistently adapted to suit children's individual interests or their learning priorities. At times, children are not fully engaged in purposeful play.  The childminder's tracking of children's progress does not enable her to accurately identify their current abilities in all areas of their learning. This hinders how she plans for their next steps in learning and does not ensure that children make the progress of which they are capable.  The childminder does not gather information from parents and carers to enable her to assess what children know and can do when they first start, to inform her planning of activities from the very beginning.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The childminder provides a safe and secure environment for children. For instance, she maintains a current paediatric first-aid qualification and ensures that she keeps her knowledge of safeguarding policies and procedures up to date.  Children are happy, relaxed and develop secure relationships with the childminder and each other. The childminder teaches children how to respect and value each other's needs. For instance, children learn how to take turns with toys and share resources.  The childminder has improved how she teaches children about the wider community. For instance, she helps older children learn about different religious festivals they each celebrate and involves families in sharing their knowledge and experiences.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 gain a greater knowledge of how to observe children to understand their level of achievement, interests and learning styles to plan more precisely for their individual learning needs 31/03/2018

p.2

Due Date

 improve how tracking is used to assess children's abilities accurately and use this information to plan activities that challenge children effectively and build on what they already know and can do, to ensure they make the progress of which they are capable. 31/03/2018

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 gather more detailed information about what children know and can do on entry to the setting, to plan more swiftly and precisely for their ongoing learning.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector spoke to the childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector observed the quality of teaching and children's learning, and evaluated activities with the childminder.  The inspector checked evidence of the suitability of the childminder, looked at a selection of children's records and safeguarding procedures, and discussed the childminder's self-evaluation process.  The inspector had a tour of the parts of the childminder's home she uses for the care of children.  The inspector took account of the written views of parents provided on the day of the inspection.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder has taken some action to meet the actions set at the last inspection. For instance, she helps children to learn about how to value and respect the differences between themselves and others. However, not all identified weaknesses have been addressed and improvements are not consistent. For instance, the childminder has received some support from her local authority to develop her teaching skills. However, this has not enabled her to focus on how she can build on her knowledge of how children learn to help her to observe, assess and plan children's learning effectively. The childminder does have a secure understanding of how to keep children safe, including how to report any concerns about children's welfare. Safeguarding is effective.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder makes regular observations and assessments of children's learning. However, these are not always accurate to enable her to plan for their next steps in learning. At times, activities do not closely match what children enjoy or need to learn next, and this limits their motivation and progress. Nevertheless, children do concentrate for short periods in some activities. For instance, they enjoy using crayons as they draw and name familiar colours. The childminder helps younger children develop their mathematical skills. For example, she teaches the names of different shapes, as children trace these with their fingers and repeat the new words they hear. The childminder has established relationships with parents to discuss children's care and progress. However, she has not gained information about what children know and can do when they first start to enable her to plan for their learning from the very beginning

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

Children are happy and settled and the childminder meets their individual care needs well overall. Younger children enjoy a range of healthy snacks the childminder provides and they gain good physical coordination skills. For instance, they learn how to wash their hands before they sit to eat and are able to feed themselves independently. Children are able to choose toys and resources that interest them. However, at times, the childminder does not follow their play choices and children lose interest and opportunities for learning are lost. The childminder helps children learn about positive behaviour. She implements clear boundaries and children learn how to behave appropriately for their age.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Children do not consistently make the progress of which they are capable and their learning needs are not met as fully as possible. However, some children, including those who speak English as an additional language, gain appropriate communication and language skills. This helps them to gain the necessary skills for their next stage in learning. Children develop an awareness of counting, shapes and numbers and are confident in using some writing resources to help develop their literacy skills.
